Paging Hatsan Escort S/A owners

The wife has been using a club Hatsan Escort pump but finds the recoil too hard, so it was suggested that she try a semi auto version, so she tried another female members s/a and found that much better so we order one for her which she tried out on Friday but the recoil on this thing is brutal, worse than the pump she said, infact it was worse than my M2 when I tried it, does this sound right? Is it because it's new?

Also when holding the empty gun and moving it from horizontal to muzzle up there was a strange noise like a spring or tube sliding down a pipe, we were told its the gas piston but I don't recall this noise with the one she tried but I don't know if it's normal as never had a gas gun, I wouldn't have thought there would be any movement from the piston apart from when fired? The gun is at the range having some bits done to it so I don't have it to see if its been put together right but now the wife is worried about it and is almost dreading using it this weekend. I've brought her a shoulder recoil pad (held in place by bra strap) to hopefully lessen the felt recoil.

Would appreciate any feedback from owners as to if this sounds normal as it even has Hatsans Triopad butt pad system that is supposed to give maximum recoil reduction.

The slidey clunk sound is normal - that is the gas piston. The Escort's that don't make that sound are because the piston sticks to the barrel-end near the gas ports.

The recoil shouldn't be harsh - it depends what they're used to. I own a Hatstand, as does a friend and both guns are what I'd class as 'soft'. Another guy I know that's shot them complains about the recoil.

As with most things shotgun related, make sure she's putting the gun into her shoulder properly. She might be holding it differently to the pump?

Blasting a few hundred 28g's through it might loosen the wavey spring in the 'smart-piston'... in theory. Try the gun yourself and see what you think.

Yeah tried it myself using same 28g cartridges that I was with my M2 and it did feel more harsh, almost as much as the 36g buckshot I had been trying on the M2 the day before, maybe the comfortec stock on the M2 is just very good compared to the Hatsan.

Hopefully it will loosen up a bit as the friends she tried was about 6 months old and had a couple of thousand rounds through it.

I have a couple of them, recoil is no worse than most other S/A, the Comfortec stock will certainly absorb more of the felt recoil compared to most S/A.

I would suggest using Hull Comp-X cartridges but they are too short for the Escort to cycle properly unless you shoot putting one in the chamber and one in the mag.

Please don't take it the wrong way, but what is the stature of Mrs P like? The reason I ask is that I bought my son a few years ago, a Hatsan Escort Youth in 20 bore. It has a 24" barrel and the one I got him has black synthetic furniture, but they are available in wood as well. It's a multi choke too...

Got to admit, I really like the gun! I've put all the butt spacers on and take it out myself, both for rabbit and clays. They are great little guns that I have found reliable, accurate and great value!

For the money, yes.

£800 plus cheaper than a new Benelli M2.

Eventually you'll want to upgrade, but if you're looking for a cheap entry to the sport (and don't fancy a pump) you can't really beat 'em.

How old is the Hatsan, has it got the older moulded stock??

I am sure DM fitted a newer version stock (one with "ribs") that seemingly improved on felt recoil.

No rattling means cleaning time.

Its brand new, the butt pad is shaped almost like a semi circle with almost a honeycomb construction.

Good news is that the "Past" hidden shoulder recoil pad has worked a treat and significantly reduced the felt recoil, just need to do some fine tuning on the fit.
