Trying to behave myself whilst STMBO has gone to M&S with her friend shopping...God knows for what???...oh yes...a few more thermal vests for Rob... But I've just finished my first read of the chapter dealing with Barrel Changing.

Fascinating....one day...I'll have a go...when one of my Remington 700 barrels gets shot out.

I bought the action wrenches and barrel vices a few years ago from Brownells.

All I need now is a depth mic, headspace gauges, a finish chambering reamer and a pre threaded barrel...and a bolt lug lapping kit.

The book is by Patrick Sweeney and it covers just about everything for a plonker like me to bugger up a good gun...you're thinking...well, there's not much else I haven't successfully changed on my rifles...or my cars over the years.

This 'replacing a Remington barrel' keeps cropping up on the forum.

Brownells sell what they call a 'short-chambered' barrel for the Rem 700 and others. A typical 308 stainless-steel barrel in Varmint contour is $325

Here's what it involves to fit it:

First, remove the old barrel (can be a bugger!)
Screw on the new barrel and check headspace with 'go' gauge. Let's say it's short by 25 thou.
Remove barrel, set it up in the lathe and run-in the reamer to achieve the correct headspace.
Check for bolt-nose clearance and if OK, screw onto the action.
Job done.

If anyone wants to get hold of such a barrel I would be happy to do the work as it would make a feature for Target Shooter magazine but, I suspect that getting a pre-chambered barrel out of the States might be quite difficult - and expensive.

I suspect it would be cheaper and definitely quicker to buy a Bergara barrel from Brian Fox and let his gunsmith chamber, thread and fit it.

...or, I might fit an adjustable Graco comb to my Beretta White Onyx...not that it will help me hit more clays mind...let's face it...I'm getting old ... eyes are hopeless and slower by the day.
