Very disappointed with Redding Model #2 Scale

Hi,

Last Saturday I bought a Redding model #2 scale from "Norman Clark" when at the Show and I am thinking about returning it.

I have read some reviews and people see, to be happy with it. I agree there are some "design" points that should be revisited, for example the adjusting screw etc, but the point that has really disappointed me is that "The scale is merely a sticker, and mine seemed to be slightly out of alignment with the actual grooves".

OK, I could live with the fact that the 0 is not really on the mark but a little bit to the right or the left (which one?) but what I will accept is that once you go up in weight, to 200 grain, not even half its capacity, then the grove is perfectly aligned with the scale sticker.

Let me please try to put some pictures so you can see what I mean and then I would really appreciate your advise on it, I think I should return it, what do you think?

But then the fit is good once yo u go over 200 grain:

Would you return it? I think I should because that misalignment might induce errors and on the scale each notch (grove) is 5 grain !!! so big and dangerous errors could happen...

I'd return it and get an exchange or money back. They are good scales though, but you want to know its reading correctly.

Mines the same although an earlier version which I've had for 30 odd years, it is a struggle some times to be clear. I was thinking that I might paint in some of serrations to mark which was which.

yes, I think I'm going to return it.

How come that scale passed any quality checks? I guess to cut costs down they just check one in a batch? or even less? I read that all Reddin scales where tested by the american whatever standards institute.. it seems no more?...

Its a shame really because Redding always had the highest reputation for quality. I bought all my stuff from them.

Hi,
I phoned "Norman Clark gunsmiths" a few times but couldn't speak with them, they were busy and nobody gets the phone now (not office hours I guess).
I will phone them again to let them know I want to return the scale and I would like a full refund. I have good references about them so I guess there will be no problems at all.

I have decided that it's too high the risk... each notch is 5 grain! so it could move accidentally and 5 grains more in a load is a big BANG...
And what is very "suspicious" to me is than from the 200 grains the notches and the scale marks are perfectly in line... so what's happening here? all the marks should be the same so, I mean the "offset" should be the same in all the scale range so I think there is something else and not only that when they put the sticker with the marks they did it wrong.


By the way thanks for the pictures of those old scales.. they look fantastic, robust, well made to last a life long and more.

When I said that Redding scales are "super tested", I took it from their website: "Every Redding scale manufactured is individually tested and adjusted to U.S. Bureau of Standards Approved Master Weights, and guaranteed accurate to less than 1/10 grain!"

Anyway I have sent the following to Norman Clark Gunsmiths, I hope their reaction is positive:
"Dear Sir,

Last Saturday 9th February 2013 I bought some items in the stand you had at the Show. One of the items was a Redding Scale model #2.

I am not satisfied with the quality of the scale and I think there is something wrong with it so I would like to please return it for a refund.

I have tried to contact you a few times this afternoon, around 15:00, but the line was engaged and then around 18:30 nobody replied I guess it was already out of business hours.

The main problem is that the marks in the scale are not in line with the groves so it is very difficult to tell what a weight really is. Please check attached photos "Detail of 0" and "Zero on Scale"
What makes things worse and make me thing something serious is not right with this scale is that from the 200 grain mark, everything seems to be in line... This does not make sense: if the scale were true and right then the "offset" between the groves and the scale marks should be the same all around it's range. Please check attached photo "Detail of 200".

Each mark or notch in that scale is 5 grain what is a huge quantity of powder that could go wrong in a load and I am not going to take that risk.
