Any particular reason for going for 7.62x51 rather than sticking with the 7.62x54R ?

Three reasons -

As I understand it, in 7.62x54r the barrel twist was changed in favour of heavier api projectiles so when you shoot regular ball through it, its accuracy suffers due to lighter weight.

Secondly, much greater range of milsurp and factory ammo to choose from in 7.62 / .308

Thirdly, it was the only one available and I got it for a fraction of the trade price so beggars cannot be choosers.

Hmmm, being a Yorkshire badger we can follow that logic...

We'd like something similar in 7.62x54R though it would be our only 'modern' gun - the sett armoury mainly comprises pre-1919 bolt action rifles. How does the function of a straight pull compare with an old bolt action? Those we have seen at our club, mainly straight pull AR15 / 16 types, look to be a right royal pain in the posterior: difficult case extraction and all the ergonomics of spikey breezeblock

Prior to this I started off with a Enfield Enforcer before moving to a Rem 700 in AICS stock. I also had a K31 for a while - regret selling it !! For stalking, a Parker Hale in .270

I now have a AR straightpull in .223 for most of my target shooting and have found no extraction problems whatsoever.

Likewise the Dragunov - with GGG ammo - it works flawlessly. It gets a bit sticky on MEN and DAG milsurp though.

I find a straight pull faster than a conventional bolt action. Similar to but again slightly faster than a Schmidt Rubin K31 due to the assistance of the return spring.

I've got an SVD in 7.62x54 and it works flawlessly. I'd be lying if I said it was the most sophisticated thing out there, but it is exceptionally good fun. Mine hasn't got any charging handle mods. No problems with extraction or feeding, it eats the cheapest Milsurp C&G has in stock. Everyone should have an SVD

Badger, I can only imagine that your fellow club members have purchased their rifles from the wrong supplier.....the ergonomics of the AR15 are not to everyone's taste, but they are admired (and copied) by many.

Always considered getting one of these and adding a surplus russian pso-1 to it and wood. Id rather have it in 7.62x54r, but that one looks tidy
