L42A1

#1 Post by leaky5 »

Does anyone on here own an L42A1 ? I managed to get on a TA snipers course about 25 years ago and used one then.
But after that I never managed to touch one again, apparently each regiment was allocated a batch of them but they tended to be locked away in the HQ armoury.

A friend has one.
They are big money if you can even find one.

I remember talking to a fellow shooter about the L42A1 on the range maybe 5-6 years ago. He had picked one up for GBP500 complete with transit case and a few bits and bobs however could not get on with it so had sold it on for a staggering GBP800 and was quite embarrassed about making such a profit so quickly.

Last one I saw was up for GBP7700.....

I think I can still remember the scope clicks from 100-900m 2-3-3-3-4-4-6-7
such a simple system, count the clicks back from 100 till it stops and you can set the scope to any distance without looking at the turret.

I have also been trying to get hold of a photo taken whilst on the course. About 20 of us all in hand made Gillie suits + L42A1's

I think the photographer was from the Royal Anglian unit based in Peterborough at the time, but I have not
been able to confirm that. I might make that a task for this year.

Actually I might start with the SASC to see if they have any record of the course. It was run by one of their W02's (an ex Rhodesian Selous Scout)
and a Sergeant or two as well.

A Bloke at our club has 2 or 3 if his last deal went well, and yes they are big money
What is a Sapper? This versatile genius condenses the whole system of military engineering and all that is useful and practical. He is a man of all work of the Army and the public ready to do anything or go anywhere, in short, he is a Sapper.

Your click values are correct, happen to have a full copy of the sniper pocket book dated march 1974

Basic wind table For a 10 mph wind at right angles 100 to 1000 m in clicks 1,2,3,4,5,7,9,11,13,14

I had this until a few years ago, got lost during a house move.

Remember shooting Hawkins prone a lot on the course. Build up the front end of the sling where it meets the rifle with gaffer tape
to create a handle, hold this with the left hand and resting on the floor, left arm out straight and right shoulder over the top of the
stock.
