You are going to buy an out of the box new rifle. :o

And here was me thinking that your posts might have been starting to get mildly interesting.

Oh well back you go with the herd.

We need an exception to prove the rule, Dromia. And we're a troop or cete in plural, not a herd.

Technically yes, but that is certainly herd behaviours you are showing.

If it will appease the spirits, Dromia, we also have our eye on a nice 7x64 Mauser that's even older than you...

A smart shooter would wait for the cheap discards filling the market as the herd throws itself off the cliff for the latest new and shiny.

I'm not really that old just look it after all these years of being around people.

It may be that the Tikka has the same bolt face for the 6,5x55 and .308 - I have never checked however I do have an M65A here in .308 which is a long action so I will check when I get a minute. The other thing to consider is you can open bolt face diameters at a push however this may have implications on the extractor and to a lesser degree the ejector if fitted.
I have a early model Tikka that was originally chambered in .308 its been re barrelled in 6.5x55 it shoots great the only thing wrong with it. It will not feed 6.5x55 rounds from the magazine it has to be single loaded. Ideally I would like it re chambered in .260 Remington but there is no hurry just enjoying shooting and re loading for it at the moment.

I got to have a good look at the AI AT308 today and I was impressed with what I saw. A bit of gossip came out of a conversation I had, apparently Border Barrels are in a bit of financial trouble and not all AI rifles carry their barrels anymore. Apparently if the barrel has a serial number with a 3 in it it's Border, if it's a 1, it's a Lothar Walther barrel. Now... this has me a little concerned, in respect that I had always believed it was the Border barrel that set their rifles ahead of the rest, if they're using Lothar Walther, doesn't this mean they're probably no better than a rem 700 now? I might be far off on that statement and I'm certainly not trying to put rem 700's down, they're excellent, it's just AI's rifles are `more excellent...` if you know what I mean. Based on that info, what do people think? Would a Border barrel AI AT308 shoot better than an Lothar Walther AI AT308?

I thought that AI had periodically used walther barrels for a long time!
