Nobody has yet explained to me how an L1A1 conversion is legally possible. Genuinely interested in what the difference is.

I am told it works like this:

A complete firearm can be either section 1 or section 5.
Pressure-bearing component parts of firearms are controlled under Section 1 only.
Therefore, if you take a section 5 firearm and dismantle it, you then have:
a) Destroyed (legally) that section 5 firearm - it no longer exists as a single licensable unit.
b) Created a pile of section 1 components.
If you then assemble a firearm from those parts, which is built so as not to fall into section 5, you then have a section 1 firearm and some leftover bits.

Apparently the Home Office gets a bit anal about closing off gas ports and details of trigger sear operation, but that's the basics. Rather nifty lateral thinking there!

if I remember the conversation correctly, Gavin also had the receivers made so that they were not compatible with the original parts, I have fired one of his and it worked very well, so it was a successful project.

Just out of interest and in the context of hard extractions, what are the L1A1's chambered in? 7.62x51 or .308?

Mine is from ACR and it's chambered for .308.

I believe this was done because .308s are normally an easier extraction than 7.62 in straight pulls.

Interesting... I was told by the previous owner of my FAL that GGG was buttery, that couldn't have been further from the truth, it was unusable. Rifle pointing straight up with both hands around the cocking handle, banging it on the bench... sign01

I don't think he realised it was chambered in .308, but after trying both on Sunday, .308 was a dream. The main reason I asked, is because I wonder if other people with L1A1's/FALs and are having trouble with extraction, realise what calibre their rifle was chambered in. Mine says 7.62 on the tin, but it's definitely .308 as I spoke with the gunsmith that worked on my rifle.

Because I was told that it would be fine, initially, I tried various brands of 7.62 of NATO stuff but all had hard extraction. I found that Privi .308 had less issues but the accuracy was iffy. I then experimented with various brands of .308 but still had extraction problems with most but less with Privy.

As I was always going to hand load for .308 (try getting 7.62 dies - not I wanted any) I now shoot nothing but my own stuff and normally have no issues.

There has always been a question about the compatibility of the the two cartridges and their subtle differences, here's a site that is quite interesting:

Remember though, when considering all these questions and comparisons, they are normally assuming semi-automatic useage. Extraction issues are often not a problem there because of the mechanics and forces involved.

We don't have that luxury so we must try and apply them to straight pulls.

Interesting article, thanks. I didn't realise the differences, but after last weekend I'm starting to and I think you're link filled the gaps. Interestingly my M14 cycles GGG 7.62x51 perfectly, almost effortlessly... I'm glad I have something that shoots the 400 GGG rounds I just bought...

I have heard that Gavin is planning on doing another run of L1A1's when he gets enough names of people who want them.
