What about scraps of hardwood flooring if the planks are wide enough?

That'll do provided its wide and thick enough. Ideally you're looking for a hole with a depth of at least 15mm.

15mm deep is what I did for mine, I will dig the drawings out and post them up if anyone is interested in trying this.
