I spotted a rifle I really 'needed' for GBP80 end of last year. The RFD to RFD was going to be another GBP50 which rather took the edge off the deal. Apparently it was to cover the monthly 'costs' of the electronic RFD register the person uses.

Yourself as a dealer knows how much it costs to send things...it costs nothing but inconvenience to receive a gun, so when I see folk like futons and North Wales shooting school charge £60 and £75 pounds to receive a gun you know your being shafted.....

I'm quite lucky in that I dont mind driving an hour to meet someone who's Selling or buying a gun Which puts my reach down to Cornwall, south to Bournemouth, East to London and as far north as Uttoxeter or Shropshire....in some cases it just economic sense if someone's buying a gun and the dealer fees are £50 their end but only £25 in petrol to drive then it's two fingers up to the rfd fees..

Folk further up north who want to buy from further south are going to be put out a bit by this and it should not be that way...

About time rfd transfers were regulated (charges wise) actual cartridge plus say £5 and £5 to receive.....that good will may spur I

I agree with most of your sentiments, and shooting is expensive enough but as for receiving costing nothing...

Well, before I can even open up I have to pay for my RFD certificate, my security system, my business insurance and my rent and services, etc. All this has to be paid before I can even think about receiving anything that I have to be there to sign for. I'm not even taking in to account the cost of my time, especially as it is a second job for me and most likely I may have just opened in this instance to be there to sign for this one parcel (and when do the couriers arrive? - any time between 07:00 and 19:00). Inconvenience costs time and time costs money.

However, that being said I do think it is a bit steep the charges some dealers put on the transfer of a firearm.
In all fairness though, before a transfer occurs the buyer/seller should ask the dealer(s) the fees and if not satisfied go somewhere else or as you do; travel to meet the seller and cut out the middle man.

Don't forget the sending it to nearest RFD to the buyer yourself option.

The law states that the FINAL hand-over part of the transaction has to be either face-to-face or at an RFD.
It is 100% legal to send a gun by ParcleFarce24....and is just over £16 cost-wise.
A big saving on some sending RFD admin. fees/rip-off courier charges.

In the case of a Section 1 item, the buyer would send you their FAC for completion.
That way they've already got it on their FAC when they collect from the RFD you post it to.
Saves a little admin. time at the receiving end too.

The potential (and realised, in one case for me) arse ache with arguments on condition and moderator proof status, the loss of any extra "goodies" (bullets, brass, powder etc.) and the cost even at the "usual" RFD rate of £25 each end mean that unless it was something amazingly rare and for whatever reason I couldn't get to it in person mean that I don't consider RFD transfers.

Frankly, I'd rather take a day off and make a bit of a trip out of it (drop in to relatives etc.). However, I'm very lucky in being able to do that.
