Yet, some of us are just as small minded when it comes to other shooters. Be they airsoft and "real" shooters say they are wierd. Or its CSR and F class shooters tut tut. Or its clay shooters being horrified at practical shotgun !! I have seen ex pistol shooters saying terrible things about the guys who shoot practical pistol with those co2 pistols.

As to some people getting worried or confused seeing someone in camo with a firearm - they will be confused anyway. They will see a military rifle even if they done see camo.

How about this ? If you dont like camo - dont wear it! Just dont stereotype others who do. And dont enforce prohibitions when you once upon a time, items you loved were prohibited !!!

And while we are on the issue of perceptions -

Any anti who had a look at a practical shotgun match would have MUCH to say. Especially when you consider some CoF resemble a "Hereford Killing House", shooting around barricades and windows, entering doors etc etc

If the Govt ever do start prohibiting things based on perception, PSG will be the first thing to go, regardless of clothing worn !!!

Well, maybe the thing is, speaking for myself, I'm a 'hunter' as opposed to a 'shooter'. I see my Club as probably more of a social thing, rather than a place to go & fire off hundreds of rounds. As do my fellow-members. That's not to everyone's taste, by a long shot (pardon the pun...). I get that. But, yes, I do raise an eyebrow when I see all the semi-military outfits and the black guns, and I don't apologise for that.

Maybe it's because I'm an OAP. Maybe because I'm a grrl. Whatever. I don't want to stop folks doing all that. I just don't want to be there, that's all. Sorry that this has offered offence to some here. Maybe we can just agree to disagree? :)

I personally do not respond positively to people dressing up military style mainly I suspect because of my utter distaste for the re-enacting community.

However that personal view of the type is just that personal and it is up to me to live with it. I would defend anyone's right to legally dress as they please when shooting.

Banning clothing makes as much sense as banning firearms when it comes to public safety, one cannot tell a book by its cover.

Perception my behind, so much for sound evidence based policy making, the more we give into "perceptions" the more we give into ignorance, the rule of the mob and the gutter press (mind you I don't think there is any other kind of press) and its scumbag journalists seeking to whip up storms and outrage for no other purpose than lining their pockets and damn the consequences.

I've known a fair few vegetarian (and one vegan) shooters, as I have said to Michael Yardley, the image of posing with dead game could be seen as negative by those in and outside of the community, just look at the backlash big game shooters get not via the press and social media, in theory this image is just as, if not more damaging than those of shooters in camo using 'black rifles'.

Just for the record, I am not anti-hunting myself, but the thought is worth bearing.

If you don't mind me asking Dromia, why do you have a distaste for re-enactors?

I have worn (by accident) all black outfits to shoot in, i have worn all civvie camo outfits to shoot in, in the winter because they are fleece lined and i've worn all old DPM before because i was airsofting and needed to be camoflauged and knew i'd be getting up to the eyeballs. I have zero issues with people wearing whatever they like if its appropriate to the occasion.

However, perception is a real thing, and like it or not it does matter what the general public think of us. Lets just say a mainland British news channel did a piece on practical shooting like ITV Jersey did for the Island Games (@14:15);

Do people honestly think there'd be no difference in reaction if all of the shooters participating were in full camo or Hereford pyjamas as opposed to the video above where everyone was just wearing polo/sports tops and cargo shorts/pants simply because they were using 'military looking guns'??

Or if the police were doing an inspection on a club and everyone at the shooting points was wearing SWAT overalls and webbing?

I have no problem with anybody wearing anything to shoot at a personal level, however until shooting is a main stream sport and we can start dictating terms, we're going to have to 'play ball' to some degree.

All these disparaging words of what you wear when you're shooting, have a thought for the Cowboy shooters, they probably come in for more flak than anyone!!!!

Makes a change from me, I just wear what I have on hand. I've worn jeans, shorts (last saturday) and whatever else was around. Only thing I've not done is gone starkers as they start saying things about you when you do that
