A big plus 1 on what Robert303 said especially the points about "get a written reply" and consulting your shooting association. I strongly believe that every shooter should belong to at least one shooting organisation if they value their sport. They will supply you with good independent advice something that some firearms departments are not always good at.

should be on every shooters computer. Then if you are uncertain about something send an email to your local licensing team or the Home Office and get a written reply. OR get your Club Sec to get onto which ever body they are affiliated to to get advice. I have found the NRA very good.

We have just relocated from Bedfordshire to Lincolnshire, the move and also past experience from clubs and this forum has made it very clear to us that the local firearms departments very often have their own rules and interpretation of the law.
Because the law is rather vague in many areas it is easy for a firearms department to have their own approach to dealing with shooters et al.
This is very often influenced by not enough money/resources etc.

On top of that the firearms departments do not always want to communicate with the various organisations we can be members of. Eg BASC/NRA
So it becomes difficult to change/challenge anything, especially because I am sure most of us do not want to "rock the boat" so to speak.
Which means very often it becomes a matter of setting a precedent, prove that you are right by referring to the firearms act or referring to other departments and how they do it.
