Tested the micro servo and there was far too much play in the linkage, metal gears should help but I've found a 12kg mini servo for £1.30 so I've ordered 10 to test. If this works fine I may just buy their entire stock :-)
Cost still isn't looking bad though, might be able to keep it under £150 depending on the mechanical fixings I can find.

looking good!

what sort of fixings does it need?

That's on max speed for that particular servo, I think it's fast enough, could be quicker if the linkage is changed but I can't get my head around the physics of that :D
Increase the speed by moving the anchor point on the flag closer to the pivot point, you should then be able to use less motion on the servo to get the same amount of turn on the flag. Less motion (rotation) means that you're fractioning the time it takes to turn by the amount of movement you can take out to get the same turn...

Make sense?

Looks good though.

Cheers :D
not sure yet, just something to hold the targets. Needs to be readily available and suit a standard size bit O' wood.
Door hinge isn't ideal as it will need to be unscrewed to replace the target, needs some form of cage or bracket really.

It does make sense TG, I'll give it a go, ta.

what about not using wood? maybe terry clips or something similar in plastic, with a piece of solid plastic conduit, with the target flag screwed onto that. if worried about the force of the bullet turning it, drill a hole in the conduit and have that fit over a panhead screwhead, sticking out above the clip? you could even have two clips with the head between them. you then hinge that bit of wood

20mm conduit is under £1 a metre.... and readily availiable, plus lots of fixing options are out there

Ahh... I just spent ages making a diagram to explain it and you get it...

haha! Doh!

Well, just for reference... :p

Screwing the targets in would take lots of time... it needs to be quick turnovers, which means dropping in fresh targets and having them sit snugly but loose enough that you don't need tools to get them out, into an assembly...

The looks of what the original mini mcqueens have done looks good.. if you want to snug it up, some knurled computer screws threaded into the bracket would do...

As for what to use for the bracket though, not sure... hinges are the best choice for a pivot point, but what do you attach to the hinge, it needs some box section with a bottom.... or perhaps even just crimped box section to keep it cheap... not sure about sharp edges though with crimping it off... It also needs somewhere on the bottom of the bracket to mount the anchor point for the servo control...

LOL, pics are always good TG. My brain tells me that that will increase the force required to turn it, which should be fine for the beefy servos I reckon.

That could work Bradaz, it would be attached to the servo anyway so shouldn't rotate, would probably just want an end-cap gluing on the bottom for the servo linkage and a slot cut in the top for the target, or screwed as you said.

I'll have another look at the original setup to see what they did. My original plan was a hinge with some form of post holder so the flags can just be popped in and out as necessary. Might be as simple as 2 U brackets fitted together, I'll see what's available
