Oops. My rifle is actually 1:7 twist.

Anyway... what would be the best, temperature insensitive powder that will chuck both 62gr .223 and 147gr .308 downrange in an orderly fashion? As I've hinted, this will not be a full-on 'hobby'. I'll work up my loads carefully of course but I simply don't have the inclination, time or money to mince around trying different powders, given that I only hit the range, per calibre, every four weeks or so.

There must be a popular 'go-to' powder for these two weights/calibres? I've read many forumites using H4895, Varget, BLC-2, H335, Ramshot TAC, W748 etc... but what's the consensus here?

Relading with FMJ tried that in the beginning and the "mexican match" pulling the fmj and loading a match bullet.

N140 does it for me in 223 with the 69 grain Sierra's Clover leaf at 100 yards doing the OCW method. (Not saying the load as they had to be single loaded to collimator length)

N140 and the 155 grain Sierra Plama in 308 very good groups with it, though I must say the 168 grain HPS stuff is excellent out of my rifle since it was bedded. Got clover leafs at 200 well one three shot group while sighting in. (Styer CISM apparently set up for 168 grain stuff)

ok , I would go varget in your position and run a 69g or the 77g match king (77g will mag load unlike my fav the 75gamax)

I'd say N140 would work as well but I'd use varget if you can get hold of it?

Yup, around 24grains of Varget behind a 75, 77 or 80 grainer will do the business. (Hornady 75gn HPBT and the Sierra 77s will load to mag length OK.)

I've now read literally hundreds of threads over the course of four days. Now that my eyes have stopped bleeding and my brain has stopped melting, I've decided to opt for:

SMK 69gr for the 5.56 (1:7 twist, 16in (CL Lothar-Walther))
SMK 155gr for the 7.62 (1:11.25 twist, 16in (SS match))
Both to be chucked with Ramshot TAC (CFE233 was a close contender, losing to cost).

It'll do.

...and I've seen the light and bought an RCBS 5-0-5.
