I'm with the Section 15(1) interpretation - provided it's a section 1 rifle that's been left behind, it's not illegal for a club member to have possession of another member's rifle.

But being pragmatic, we should all be working to the "need to know" principle - especially where the police are concerned. After all, they're not on our side when it comes to common sense and security, and nobody deserves a 5 year prison sentence for doing the right thing.

How very true Gaz, rather sad but true story, one of my local RFD's (Sec 1 at the time) had a house clearance chap walk into his shop a few years back, he had found a live Luger in the attic of a an elderly person who had recently died.

Now being a Saturday morning the RFD did the right thing, made sure it was clear and safe (obviously hadn't been fired in 70 years), contacted his Police firearms team (Gloucester) and left a message, no one was in.

He secured the Luger over the weekend and expected someone to pop out and pick it up on the Monday, despite repeated chasing all the following week, they finally turned up on the Friday, threatened to arrest him and remove his RFD!!!!

This stupid situation was sorted out over the next week, but it shows when you get a "by the book" individual, who can't think for themselves....you have a real problem.
