Going back to the idea of the towbar on the sports car. The actor James Robertson Justice in addition to being a keen austringer (falconry) was a keen wildfowler and drove a white Rolls Royce which he used to tow a punt complete with punt gun around. Apparently the punt gun was one of the largest ever made also had one of the longest barrels ever fitted to such a gun.
The story goes that while maneuvering the car one day the barrel struck the rear of the car causing damage due to its excessive length and in a rage he took a hacksaw to the barrel and removed a fair bit of its length. The gun is I believe currently part of the BASC collection on display at Marford Mill.

Checked with the police beforehand and it was confirmed that so long as it was under cover, locked, and suitably secured there was no bother. I never left the bike unattended - never had to as the fuel tank was good for well over two hundred miles a pop.

So I would say the planned means of carrying it on a car would be fine and certainly legal.

The previous owner (Gov.) had an explosives sticker on it - I removed this to draw attention away from the contents and replaced it with corny fishing enthusiast stickers and such.

I no longer own the bike. However the case is extremely strong and was firmly bolted to the frame - it was also padlocked and had a thick motorcycle cable physically chaining it to the bike. It may well have become badly damaged in a prang but would not have been separated from the bike without deliberate help and tools. So, in that scenario, the fault would lie with whoever took it. I'm a stuffy old traditionalist still locked into the mentality that blame falls with the wrongdoer and not the object or the victim of their acts.

The Firearms Rules 1998, which forms the basis for secure storage conditions, it is stated that;

"When a gun or section 1 ammunition is being used or the holder has the gun with him for some purpose connected with its use, transfer or sale, reasonable precautions must be taken for the safe custody of the gun(s) and section 1 ammunition."

So if a rifle is locked in a rifle case, secured to the back of a motorbike and is lost in an accident, it would have to be one really spiteful copper who stuck someone on for that! But, if it was just tied to the luggage rack with a couple of bungies, is that "reasonable"?
