Surely the impact cast is of the chamber only?

To slug the bore of a rifle my process is as follows, oil the bore well, place a lubricated lead ball on the mouth of the muzzle, place something on top to protect the crown, I use a piece of oak and strike it with a light hammer to force the ball into the bore, this will shave any excess lead off the ball and you should then have a ball in the bore that can be driven down to the chamber fairly easily using a pusher of some sort. I use oak dowels however some people use a brass rod, or brass rods stacked.

Catch the slug at the other end and measure. I keep mine in containers with the rifle details and date of slug.

An impact cast of the chamber will also take measurements of the barrell if you slug is long enough.

Also impact casts can be made anywhere in the barrel.

Take as tight a fitting rod as you can get and put a calibre for the rifle gas check on the end, a dab of bullet lube will hold it in place, insert into the barrel from the chamber to the point in the barrel that you want to measure, drop in a just under size for the calibre lead slug, insert a rod and gas check as per the first one ontop of the slug and pound away, remove either rod and drive out the slug with the remaining rod.

Simple.

To be totally accurate impact slugs of the freebore/lead/groove/bore dimensions using a lead filled fired case don't actually measure the chamber.

ok, an update, on my drive home this afternoon i got the chance to ring chris, during his earlier tests, he got real bad leading from off the shelf magtech lead bullets, and so now does not advise the use of lead. so bore sizing and getting the right boolit should mean that leading wont be a problem.

he has said he will slug the barrel for me, to ensure i dont mess up any baffles etc, although i still don't quite understand why he is so touchy about removing and reinstalling the baffles, as it sounds like they are just spaced on a rod. but if he's that worried i'll let him do it, and maybe he'll show me how it all fits together?

i mentioned about the noise of the rounds too, he did say that they seemed to get quiter as it bedded in, and advised i try to get my rounds lower to around 600fps, so i will have to see what 4.7gr of bullseye was doing fps wise

i will still be looking to buy some accurate no2 as well. and when i know bore size, i'll be seeing if dodyrog can do a selection of weights and shapes, and see what i get good results from

If you are going back to see Chris ask the little bloke who takes the cash about his 1911 ACP load, he gave it to me when i picked mine up, and it worked really well and was quiet.

I have since sold mine with all the loading info and I cannot remember what it was, but it worked well.

A mate now owns your rifle, he does not reload for it uses FMJ factory ammo, but I will ask him if he still has the reload data and pass it on.

45ACP only info he was given for the De-lisle from the dealer...

200gr Lead Bullet using Unique powder 5.1grs min & max charge giving 800FPS..he has not used this himself so does not know if it worked or not ie how accurate?
