I do not know him that well but he is calm natured, even when really annoyed he hardly shows it. His job requires reasonable patience and he deals with the upper echelons of society on a daily basis. No recent trouble with the police - not even a speeding ticket.

Either mad or a problem with drink or drugs that has required GP intervention....
Very, very unlikely given his job and the diligence with which he carries it out. Domestic violence - again unlikely.

Plenty to guess at, but I'll wait and see what I can get from him.

He may verry well have no conviictions, but that does not mean he does not pose a risk. If not medical, then it will be "intel" led. Every copper can give you a list of bullies who behind closed doors use their wives as punch bags and are never prosecuted as the wives will never support a prosecution but will back up their husbands. Outwardly, they will have the air of respectibility.

You said this fella was just an aquaintence, personally, knowing what you know now, I'd steer well clear. There are former criminals, who have been to prison, have been issued SGC's after a period. As mentioned above, refusals are a "big deal" and people are not refused easily, or often!

I understand what you are saying. It is just that we shoot at the same monthly shoot and I have done for many years - some months I will see him others not, we may be in the same group shooting together or not but just luck of the draw.

I wouldn't be so sure. My university club had a rather odd response to our monthly return of members once, along the lines of "we are not happy with Member X." We asked plod (Met) why that was and they absolutely would not say anything more, beyond "if this individual applied for a firearms certificate we would not be happy."

Me and the secretary asked Member X, then aged in his early 20s, whether he'd be happy to have a quiet chat with us. It transpired that when he was 18 he'd got involved in a bar brawl after someone started having a go at his girlfriend and he was unlucky enough to get caught afterwards. Being 18, naive and not knowing what a solicitor was, he was talked into accepting a police caution for ABH, he told us.

In the end we gave him airgun membership only, and agreed amongst the committee that he wouldn't be given unsupervised access to those.

I'm guessing in this day and age the police aren't taking any chances at all.

Some of the folk you've known for years will surprise you. Only last week a guy who i'd previously called trustworthy asked me to take some of his shotguns because he'd just been caught drunk whilst driving. He almost boasted that he was over 3 times the legal limit!

He couldn't understand why i was narked at him and told him where to go.

By "take" did he mean, "here, have a gift of these guns!"?
