Well it shoots, in fact it shot very well with some N140 behind 155 Scenars, however the brass is ejected ten feet above my head and is taking a real kicking on something. The double dings are if my spotter failed to catch them before they hit the concrete and the single dings are from the rifle. Is this normal for the Model 1911?

Depends on how hard you work the bolt, I usually eject slowly with my hand over the receiver to capture the case.

as above ^^^ if you move the bolt back gently the case will just pop into the other palm.

Yes, open the bolt more slowly. I used to have a party trick where I'd time the bolt opening to throw the case maybe three, four feet up, take my right hand off the Stock wrist and use it to catch the case in mid-air on its way back down. This simple trick produced much amusement amongst spectators and an unmerited degree of admiration.
