Also very impressed with a Sako 85 Varmint Laminate and Savage 12 FTR we had come along on a long range shoot recently, both of which new would be comfortably under your budget.
EDIT: Bore described as "in good condition although it is showing some signs of slight pitting". Maybe not, then.
I had an original Remington barrel on my 308 from riflecraft that would shoot 1/2moa with factory tap ammo and my reloads that I put a borescope down once , OMG I would not have brought that rifle if I'd seen the bore(I was many thousands of rounds in to be fair) but my goodness it shot well so I would be inclined to shoot a barrel before you dismiss it because of a bit of pitting/wear.
Very true, though there are few RFDs I know of that have their own range facilities that allows such pre purchase testing and I would imagine even fewer would allow such a rifle out of the door on a trial-or-return basis.
Obviously any secondhand rifle purchase is a gamble (a fact I am all too aware of having recently travelled a long distance to buy what was for me an enormously expensive rifle) but unfortunately in this case (especially as I love the green stock!

) I'd be looking at the TRG that slots in at £2400 on guntrader with accessories; I think the pitting is just making it too much of a gamble.

Just read, intended use is target shooting between 600 and 1000.

fair enough , and the ridiculous laws we have to comply with don't help!

As for second hand I am going to have to say no at this stage, this is my first rifle so I don't have the required knowledge to have any sort of confidence in purchasing second hand.

It also looks like I need to find an AI AX and try out the stock before purchasing, I like the look of them just hadn't thought of trying first !

If you're shooting it off a bi-pod there's not much to dislike - the only bit of you touching it will be the tip of your trigger-finger, shoulder and maybe a fist supporting the butt. Some like to rest a cheek on the stock but that's adjustable anyway.
I did a review of my own AX build on

The AI chassis is much heavier than the standard Remington furniture so it takes recoil which makes it nicer to shoot.
Only criticism for 1000 yards is the barrel on the Remington is a bit short. Loads get stoked up to get you through that transonic stage the bullet hits after 900 yards.

Tithras - as Ovenpaa says - the new Ruger Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor will do all you want and save you enough ££££ to buy a decent scope.

As I wont be reloading to start with won't the 6.5 be harder and more expensive to get hold of? That was why I was under the impression that 7.62/308 is better as a starting round as its more numerous?

The Savage 12 FTR would be all you need for £1500 brand new with match grade 30" barrel and a 20 MOA rail all included
Left over £500 would go long way towards half decent scope
