Goes in S2 comes back S1 (how many more time's has this come up)

It might be simple to do, but not a DIY job.
Where did you come up with that from?

As far as in aware, the only piece of "gunsmithing" controlled by legislation is as per s4 of the 1968 Act which stipulates that only an RFD can shorten the barrels of a shotgun to below 24" for repair as long as the repair returns the barrels to 24" or over. Likewise, the proof house inspect magazine tubes of shotguns to ensure they are restricted to fall into s2, no examination or proof house stamp is required to render the shotgun s1.

S2 to S1 is a matter of licensing and nothing to do with an RFDs business.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Agreed SimG, I can think of no reason for someone with the necessary S1 slot to do the conversion themselves however it is worth running it past the FEO so they know what is happening. The removal of the crimp is usually a very straightforward process.

No need for an RFD to do it or write it on your FAC.

If you do the work on your own gun then you are the one transferring it from S2 to S1, so it should be your responsibility to write the information on the FAC and to tell the authorities. And no need to have it re-proofed as Sim says.

However, if an RFD does the gun work then he should do the paperwork (that's what you pay him for).

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.

Given some of their levels of "knowledge" & their impartial adherence to the letter of the law, so would I....

Answer has already been given....(in some cases by a serving plod)

I.e. as long as you have a S1 slot....crack on & convert it, DIY or FAC.

The "plod" will say exactly as I have done. The work does not need to be undertaken by an RFD. All you require to undertake the work yourself is the correct variation on your FAC. The paperwork in this instance you do yourself as the shotgun would be held under the authority of your SGC and you will transfer it to the authority covered by your FAC.

You will still need to inform the police of the "transfer" so that the change is noted on NFLMS and the shotgun removed from your SGC.
