This calibre of rifle / exact spec of ammo difference is why the Law Commission are going to have to make recommendations
Re: question for a rfd or someone who is up to date
If it says "7.62/.308" then 7.62 relates to x51 and not x54R if you speak to Northamptonshire licencing department. Whilst not identical, .308 is comparable to 7.62x51. If it simply states 7.62 then you should be OK for either x39, x51, x54R or anything else 7.62.

What did you apply for? If you applied for 7.62x51mm/.308 then thats what you'll be expected to buy, regardless of how its written on your FAC. IMHO 7.62/.308 is pretty clear. If you want 7.62x54R just put in the variation (keep hold of your certificate). You might even be able to just do it over the phone/covering email

It is written 7.62/308. I fancied nagant but to be fair I have other slots that need covering first so not going to worry about filling the slot.
guys

Mine said "7.62mm Rifle" and SYorks were happy or me to fill it with anything. The guidance mentions only calibre, NOT chambering so your force are going against the recommendations if they're specifying a chambering.

Unfortunately although the guidance and the FAC mention calibre, they (the big THEY) don't mean calibre as most shooters would recognise it. The guidance specifically states that a wide choice of cartridges specified by calibre is to be discouraged. In the past where I have had 30cal and have had 7.62NATO, .30-30, .308, and finally .300whisper is now frowned upon.
The OPs 7.62/308 is tricky as it mentions both, best to give the FLD a call and see if they will mind or change the slot for you.
As far a Kranks not accepting it, well they also sell .30 calibre bullet heads.....

Not according to Avon & Somerset, to them 7.62/.308 is a slot that will encompass all 7.62 and .308 calibre rifles, as such I have bought I Mosin Nagant on this authority.HALODIN wrote:If it says "7.62/.308" then 7.62 relates to x51 and not x54R if you speak to Northamptonshire licencing department. OP, speak to your FLO and to any RFDs you're thinking of dealing with and see what they are happy with, yes the guidance states only the calibre is needed, however, we all know how funny people can get about slots and the last thing you want is to drive to an RFD only for them to saw no sorry you need x54 on there.
Personally, if I know the seller in advance of getting the slot I just state the calibre, if I don't I also state the chambering, I know it's not necessary but after having wasted time with an RFD who disagreed I'd rather go for convenience

They all seem to see things differently. This was the reply I had from Northamptonshire a couple of years ago.
Where your FAC has authorisations stating ".308/7.62mm" this refers solely to 7.62mmx51 NATO as this is equivalent to .308 Winchester. 7.62mmx54R or 7.62mmx39 would have to be stated explicitly on your certificate for you to acquire a rifle in these calibres as neither is equivalent to .308 Winchester.
