What is the law on proofing moderators? I don't think any of the moderators I have owned have ever been proofed. Some have had manufacturer's stamps to indicate max calibre, but I have never seen proof house marks on any of them.

The one I have just fitted to AI #2 has a proof mark on it, the mark may even be visible in the photograph in that thread.

Both my T8 and Parker Hale moderators show proof marks. Sportsman's insisted the T8 they supllied was proofed, likewise my Remington barrels were re-proofed after threading.

NEW! Counsel's Opinion on the British laws of Proof relating to sound moderators and other muzzle attachments

Legal Counsel has now confirmed that:

1.A sound moderator is not a “part” of a “small arm” for the purposes of the Proof Acts.
2.There is no requirement in law for a sound moderator to be subject to proof.
3.The cutting of a screw thread on a barrel in order to affix a sound moderator is most unlikely to “unduly reduce it in substance or strength”, although each case will depend on its own facts.
4.The pronouncement made by the Proof Authority in October 2001 is misleading and wrong in law in a number of important respects.

No mention of moderators in the FA Acts, I don't think...only in the 2002 notes.

Just as a side issue, although I was aware of the firearm/air rifle issue with .22 mods, I'd never really considered the implications before. If I'm reading DM's posts above correctly, the situation could arise where 'Mr X' goes shopping and buys a .22 mod for his air rifle. He's stopped and searched by the police on his way home and arrested for possession of a firearm. Then what? As far as I can see he's not broken any law, but is presumably in a decidedly iffy position?

The reciept and that under the VCR Act the sale should have been recorded with all the buyers details should be proof enough of no wrong doing.
