Apart from the question of altering the rifle, although I don't believe there is a shortage of this model, there is the cost. I decided I would need to scope my Swedish mauser since I could no longer see the sights. Quoted £300 to drill and tap for mounts and to bend down the bolt...I sold the rifle and bought something else!

I know who you mean!.....a member at my club paid around £700 for a M44 "tower sniper" rifle and it was rougher than a rough thing compared to my mint £250 1944 dated M44.

I didn't get mine from him, if I had it would have been more like £600!, and mine is standard with the original iron sights.

Sorry if this drags the original post off topic but I've often wondered about how many of them are still kicking around. Sure, 37 million Mosin Nagants of all flavours were made but of the millions of M91 rifles in service with the Imperial Russian Army how many are still out there? (They were losing them at the rate of 500,000 a month at one point). Here's a challenge - find one in original configuration as carried by Ivan during the Great War for sale here in the UK. Millions more disappeared during WW2 or were so worn out that they were melted down for scrap.
Unless it's a rare variant then it probably doesn't matter at the moment. You could always contact someone like C&G and ask if he has any bent bolts for sale.

Heres the thing, the rifle is £250, about the same fo the scope and work to make it like a sniper that its not. You can see where the figures add up..... or dont depending on your outlook.

I doubt Chris would do this work, I may be wrong, last time I spoke he was snowed under and is doing more and more with section 5 stuff. it may be worth a call.

I purchased a bolt handle from accounts and was going to undertake the work myself or get a suitable smith to do it, I just need to find a nice period scope to go with it. Yes my £200 rifle will have cost me £600 but I can get £400 of that back at least when I sell the rifle & split the scope I only lose the labour.

A question for an RFD...... the mosin bolts housing, item 2 ....... Are these considered a controlled part, they are only a housing ? Image
