Convince a family member to get a FOID card and buy a few guns, they should be able to take you to the range as a guest, this is what I did in IL.

Look for a gun club in Covington, IN - that's over into the next state and only 48 mins away (according to google)... 
State lines are not far away, and I'd have to drive much further to get to Bisley to go shoot from where I live now.
If you're stopping with friends, it's not like you have to do the 9 hour flight and directly drive an hour and a half to get to Lafayette or Indianopolis the same day, is it?
