If the club could afford to they no doubt would have their own range, they already have their own club they just don't have their own range so have to hire one.
Like others have said have you seen what the MOD charge . Now that is taking the P, and by doing so they make their intentions quite clear, they simply don't want civilians usig their ranges.

We regulary use two local ranges,

Club one has a 18 point 50m gallery range or 6 point 22m gallery range available for us to hire. The club I belong to is charged £10 per day per member subject to a minimum charge of £100. If we book a half day, 10-1 or 1-4 then we get a 50% discount with a minimum £50 charge. If we hire both the range on the day we get charged an aditional flat fee of £50 for the second range.

Club two, 3 point 25m gallery range and 3 point 50m full bore range. The club I belong to is charged £50 per session that we book, a session is a morning or an afternoon or an evening. There is a restriction that only 30 people can be on site at any one time and this can be awkward at bussy times.

As an asside my home club are looking to build a 6 point 50m range for full bore and 9 point 25m range for gallery rifle and we will be considering renting out the facility if we find there are times when the club members are not making use of the range, so this is interesting to see what a "going rate" is for renting a range.

Its easy to underestimate just how much goes into a range construction and upkeep. Insurance alone is not cheap, as well as the usual maintenance of equipment, the targets, annual cleaning out of lead and deposits, filters in indoor ranges etc. Depending on the range of course and some are fields with minimum upkeep and some are proper set ups with the expected costs. I'd expect to pay a much higher amount for a range that has a club house, bar, food, toilets, turning targets, electronic scoring etc than a field range with a rickety table and no cover.

I take it that you are refering to insurance of the structure rather than insurance covering the shooting activities. I would expect any other club hiring our club range to be covered by their own shooting insurance and to be affiliated to one of the main shooting organisations. Indeed this is normally a condition of hire and made perfectly clear to the hirer.

Actually I'm referring to the PL that a land owner needs to have when allowing others access to their land, also legal expenses cover as well for the same reason. Fair point on the shooters insurance though. My point was simply that (depending on the range of course) that there is more than just a field with some things to shoot at type deal thats all.
