I've had it explained to me now.

In essence, the Chief Constable will only authorise a firearm's use at 'authorised clubs' - as and when one joins them. In other words, I need to apply for a variation to ammend the conditions which will allow use at another club - but only when I physically join it as a member.

'Guest days' are out then...

"the firearms and ammunition shall be used for target shooting and only whilst as a member of XXXclub or other home office approved rifle and or muzzle loading pistol club, on ranges suitable for the safe use of that class of firearm and with adequate financial arrangements in place to meet any injury or damage claim"

this is the wording on my FAC I understand it to mean that as long as I a member of XXXclub I can use it on any suitable range as long as there is insurance in place, it doesn't state that it has to be a club organised day, nor in my opinion does it infer that.I lose that permission should I cease to be a member of XXXclub.
I would want any clarification in writing as the spoken word is easily forgotten at a later date.

That's bollox! I wouldn't let this rest unless its peculiar to NI! Yet I sure the guys at Kells don't have to join Ballymena to shoot IPSC matches?!

Challenge it - that sounds far too restrictive.

Then again, I asked the Met to change a weird storage condition which said words to the effect of "shall be stored at the XYZ Association armoury as controlled by [primary club]." I pointed out this meant that if I rented my own locker within the armoury, technically I'd be in breach of the conditions!

I didn't point out that they'd missed off the "shall only be used on HO approved ranges" condition altogether, technically meaning that I don't need to remain a member of a club or have any good reason whatsoever to hold my firearms........ (but I'm expecting them to spot that and put it back in when they sort out the storage condition)

Do you really want "shall only be used on HO approved ranges" on your certificate, as this could then prevent you from shooting on other private ranges that have the necessary insurance provisions in place such as those operated by certain commercial concerns and dealers.

Turns out HO regs don't apply anyway here so a moot point.

I'll clarify what's possible re this on my next variation!

I spoke to my feo and my tickets going back to have a condition changed to

" the firearms listed can be used in any land or range the holder has lawful authority to shoot over"

He said no problems, less hassle for him having to approve land and add clubs for me

Good point. I did put in for "all approved ranges" rather than "HO approved" so I guess it doesn't specify exactly who approves them. Let's see what comes back next week...

Just a question about the insurance bit..When did that become a standard bit of the conditions??
