Having had a GSG-5SD Titanium I must say the StG44 looks decidedly horrible to me! :bad:

In fact as I finally managed to get out and shoot my .44 today I took the opportunity to pick up a nice new Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 for my son to plink on the indoor range with, very light (being mainly polymer), nice barrel and the mag is a joy to load compared to most of the other 22LR "black" rifles I've tried.

Hi Folks,
There are StG44s for sale at £750!
I note that GSG have a new bolt and carrier for this gun. Probably a good move as the one fitted to the GSG5 I owned (past tense - note) started to give no end of trouble. Appears to have been the ejector and the way it was staked into the carrier. I got it fixed but by that stage I was so PO'd it was traded in. I believe that later models rectified that problem.

If you want a fullbore MP44 try looking up Sport Systeme Dittrich. I have one as a straight pull. Great fun but as it uses the same strength recoil spring as the original so it keeps you fit. Ammo available from Kranks as are the cases but not the bullets. I obtaind the latter from a contact in Luxenbourg. Dies are available from Lee but pricy.

I might be tempted with the GSG .22 version but, being a Scot by birth, trained as an accountant and tight fisted by nature I'll wait until someone in the Club buys one to see if it works.

I had a set of RCBS dies but they were nicked off my stall at the Phoenix

Have you still got the compact scope on your MP44?
Ya never gave me one of the cases to modify for you

Will possibly see you at the Vinatge Arms Shoot on the 23rd ?

Hi Jon
Yup!
Will be at VAS Historic shoot. Will dig out a case for you.
Re scope ,I now have two; a modern one so I can check on the ammo and the original repro, but that needs work to get it zeroed. Need to shim it as windage/elevation adjustment is limited on scope.

Local Gunshop here in the States has one on the rack for sale. Had a play with it and it's as heavy as the original StG but is not made of pressings. Looks more like some sort of alloy and plastic castings. The cocking handle only travels along a slot which is half the length of the original and for some reason, they've put a safety slot (like a sten or MP38/40) for the charging handle to be turned up into. This was not a feature on the original 43s and 44s although the 42 did have one. The straight pull version of the 43/44 don't feature it either.

The magazine is plastic with a viewing slot down its length. Other things I noticed are the ejection port is far smaller that the original. I can understand all of these differences because of the cartridge used but you'd think that for cosmetic purposes, they could do a little better with the detail.

I'll check the US price out when I'm around there next.

Hi Paul,

Still enjoying the Sun then buddy..... I would imagine the "safety slot" was specified by whoever dictates these things in the Fatherland.

Considering the real rifle was designed to be quick and easy to manufacture, why didn't GSG use a stamped steel body and keep basic features like the port size the same as the original.

After all, the typical person who would buy one of these will be after a reproduction thats as aesthetically close as possible

It certainly looks the part, but I get the feeling GSG might have shot themselves in the foot with this one...shame it's a good idea.

Yep, still living the American Dream HV......... usflag.gif usflag.gif

I'll see if I can get some photo's of the rifle later today......bit overcast here at the moment so the daughter and wife want me to take them shopping - ha ha, that means I drop them of at a Mall and tell 'em I'll pick them up at a fixed time. This is also my licence to pop around the real shops if you know what I mean.

Chuck, was that a new or 'pre-owned' price?

Cheers
