Calton Moor Range: Badger goes underground

#1 Post by meles meles »

We've just had a superb day out at Calton Moor Rangees, near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. Go klikky http://caltonmoorrange.com/

The range is a 100 yard subterranean range run by Mike Dickinson, a truly superb ooman of the nicest type. Friendly and full of good advice, freely given. Not a bad shot either...

The range comprises two, parallel, 100 m covered pipes with a warm, waterproof and winproof firing point. The firing point is well lit, has plenty of space to lay things out and can provide for standing, sitting or prone firing positions. Targets are 100 yards away and accessed via another shed: as it was raining Mike did the honours of trogging to the far end and back again to replace the targets. We mentioned he was nice. For shorter range work there is a mobile trolley that runs up and down the tubes to allow targets to be deployed to intermediate distances.

Away from the tubes is a nice wooden classroom with a log burner, table and chairs, and a kettle. There is also a reloading station and a selection of kit for those of you who like to can your own bangs. Apparently this is very popular amongst oomans who like to do load development work: can some bangs, pop out and release them into the tubes, then back to the station to tweak the recipe.

Mike also organises stalking for those who requires it: we saw a nice stag or two in the fields nearby as we drove off, clearly oblivious to what goes on beneath their hooves.

All in all a great day. We got to play with our:

P14
SMLE
AIA no 6 carbine
K31

We can highly recommend you give Calton Moor a try. Good stuff goes on underground.

That must just be the perfect range for you! :P

You description doesn't actually do it justice - from the photos on the link, it looks a great little range with good facilities (apart from all the deer trophies...but I won't bang on about that), and perfect for zeroing and load tweeking :good:

Ah - I drove past Mike's just after Midday - If I had known you were there, I could have called in for some Badger Baiting ;)

EDIT:

Looked on Google Maps - about 8 minutes closer, but on much better (less rural) roads too

I can recommend Stead Hall - quite a few of my mates use the place too

Google Maps give Stead Hall as closer by about 3 miles

Badgers methods may differ - esp. if part of the journey involves tunnels
