Believe it or not you can find small quantities on eBay. Until recently I bought it by the 205L drum for producing biodiesel, but that's probably a bit much for cleaning rifles!Steve wrote:Just curious, but how do you buy methanol? In the old days car antifreeze was made from it,but was always inferior to glycol due to only having a lifespan of 12 months when in the cooling system so its not now a widely used chemical with vehicles. Its one of those things which i've never noticed for sale!

Sounded sarcastic to me but what ever. If it works for you great. I have used ultra sonic baths for all manner of cleaning duties and in my opinion and you dont have to agree with me I have all ways been dissapointed with the results.Lest anyone think the last sarcastic
I am serious
The Open Day involves about 240 Members volunteering their services to deliver shooting to the visiting public. Currently the organisation depends on the staff and a couple of Members committing really serious amounts of time. A few (or indeed a lot of) Members willing to help in depth with the background work would be greatly appreciated.

Its not likely that I would come and help I am one of them Northern shooters Bisley is just a word that people keep banging on about. No idea were it is and never likely to find out. I have never hired a gun in my life . I shoot my own guns and clean them my self. If I can be of assistance or help you in any way I am only to happy to help. But living at the other end of the Country that may be a bit difficult.I bow to your experience.
Hire a gun from the NRA and it is likely that some parts at least will have been washed in an ultrasonic bath, dried in an air drier and oiled in a spray.
If you think we are doing it wrong, and are a Member, I would be delighted to have you come in to the armoury and show us how to do it right.
On the morning of Sunday 9 September, after the Open Day, we will have about 200 guns to clean. My staff is me (firearms manager), Fred (armourer) and Paul (armoury assistant). We will still be running armoury issues and returns, ammo sales, firearm hire and all the other things we do on an ordinary weekend day. We would wish to get those guns cleaned with maximum effectiveness and minimum effort. Currently the ultrasonic bath is a core part of our plan. If it is not considered effective, your expertise and labour will be welcome.

Actually I am curious now what parts do you clean in the ultra sonic bath.
I believe methanol can be bought from specialist suppliers. I have access to about 180 gallons. It is not for sale by the way. :55:

To continue with the off topic vibe, methanol can be bought in quantity easy enough if you know where to look. I know several people who race drag cars (my brother is building one at the moment) and a big block chevy V8 running methanol is as common as fish and chips in the drag racing circles. Interestingly enough it runs very cool, to the point where not only do you need no cooling system (either water or air cooling) you also need to run the engine lean to the point of almost stalling in order to get the engine components and oil warm enough to race. At the moment I believe it is only around the 45-50p per litre if you buy it in 1000 litre IBC's.

Re: dishwasher + Gun
Tried it on the glass wash, came out nearly perfect!
Next time I'll use full intensive wash, still a little bit black in the corners.
Wiped it over whilst still nice and hot wil an oil soaked rag to give it a polish, and have left it muzzle down with oil in all the right places for a while to make sure everything has it's oil back!
I've got a table top dishwasher so it was a tight fit, thankfully the designers of the dishrack obviously had this in mind and provided a hook right on the back corner for the extention rod to rest on!
Very thoughtful of them!

I buy it in 200 ltr drums for making bio-diesel - I could spare a litre or twoSteve wrote:Just curious, but how do you buy methanol?
