What are your views on PPU factory ammunition?
We were at Blairadam Range on Saturday and one of the shooters was using factory PPU 303 ammunition.
It was fine at the 200 yard firing point with the sights set for that range but when we went back to the 500 yard firing point the sights had to be set at 1300 yards to get on target.
The Lee Enfield mk4 had a new barrel installed about 2 months ago so that ruled out a worn barrel the shooter commented that in his opinion PPU factory ammunition does not have the p**f to do more than 200 yards.
I have use this ammunition on the same range at the same distances using another Mk4 using the sights set at 200 and 500 and hit the targets without a problem.

I have shot PPV to 1000 yards with a .303 and it was nigh on spot on for the sights on the 4(T) and held good groups as well. At the other end of the scale I had to shoot off 100 rounds of PPV150 expanding and gave up on it and pulled the stuff in the end, it was holding great groups at 100 but would show the occasional flyer every 8-9 shots, 2-3" at 100 yards. I was using it in an Accuracy International so no rifle issues.

Re: What are your views on PPU factory ammunition?
I use PPU factory loaded in my K31 only when I want to get to 1000 yards and it performs better at that range than my reloads even though I am pushing the load, up to 600 my reloads are fine with the iron sights. I would be surprised if the PPU. 303 ammo lacks p**f although it won't be synchronised. With the iron sights. How does the rifle shoot with other makes, home loads etc?

I used some 7mm-08 and it was hot! The .223 Match was a tad warm as well.....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Their 130gr .270 was lacking in accuracy in the rifle I shot it through; 5 shot groups were 2-3MOA compared to well less than 1MOA for handloads.

Re: What are your views on PPU factory ammunition?
The only PPU factory I have used is 7.5x54 for my MAS36, the reason I bought it was for the boxer cases.
I have to be honest and say I was not impressed,it seemed under-powered and produced some of the dirtiest fired cases I have ever seen, dirty from neck to base.
I have never experienced this with any other factory loads.
My Mas has never produced dirty cases like this with any other ammunition.
Having said that, I think their brass is excellent quality.
ukrifleman.

Re: What are your views on PPU factory ammunition?
I shot 20 rnds of PPU .303 in my rebarrelled No4 on Saturday at 200yds. Complete waste of time. The ammunition would barely hold the 3 ring on a 200yd TR target (thats a 7'' Group or 3MOA) with lots creeping out to the outer. My handloads are holding the Bull (thats 2.1''or 1MOA)
I'll find out how good the brass is when i reload it. The remainder of the ammo (I've got 200rnds) will be pulled and the powder reweighed and the bullets batched to see if that improves things

I had similar trouble to that of Steve E.
The cases reload fine and accuracy with my own brew is not a problem.

Re: What are your views on PPU factory ammunition?
Interesting, I was shooting PPU today at 700yrds in 303, 7.5 x 55 and 7mm Mauser. Once I was on they kept knocking down fig 11s at 700yrds.
On Saturday 6.5 x 55 was giving 4" groups at 300yrds in a short barrelled M38.
For relatively cheap factory I find it more than adequate.
Cheap Russian Barnaul 30-06 was doing the same thing at 700 yrds on a fig 11in my Springfield '03 today.
Maybe not target ammunition but in a military rifle at military targets they do indeed do the business, for me at least. The brass isn't too bad either for even better handloaded ammunition once you've had the fun of shooting the factory ammunition.
