EOTech Holographic + Magnifier - anyone used one before?
Morning all,
I'm going to be filling the .22LR slot on my ticket at the end of the month with a Sig 522 SWAT and I've been pondering the optics options.
There's a guy at our club who shoots his M4-style gallery rifle with an EOTech XPS holographic sight with decent results and I quite fancy one myself. Also, my work ship me off to the US every 3 months and I'm going in August, so I can pick one up for around half the cost in the UK.
My question is around the flip-to-side magnifiers that go with 'em. Anyone have any experience of them?
They come in various powers from 3x to 7x and they're also much cheaper in the US, so if they're worth considering, I'll pick one up whilst I'm there too.
Interested to hear from anyone who's had some hands-on experience.
Cheers,
Jud

Also consider Aimpoint. ar15.com has loads on the Aimpoint vs Eotech debate.

Yes I've used the x3 magnifer. In short, it just adds to the disappointment that Eotech was!
Trouble is, the reticle is in short, fuzzy. It continually looks like it's out of focus. In fact, when I first looked through an Eotech, I really upset the owner of it as I asked him if it was a snide or not. I really thought it was that poor, it must be a rip off.
Have a look at the Leupold prismatic. It has a beautifully sharp and crisp recticule when illuminated. And, because it's etched, should your battery run out at exactly the wrong time, you can still shoot!!

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I've looked at the Eotech, Aimpoint and Prismatic and the problem with the Leupold Prismatic though is you can't mount it anywhere you want on the top rail, it has to be where you would mount a traditional scope, and therefore you can't use a magnifier with it.
I'm surprised you found the EoTech to be fuzzy Sim, the 3 i've had a look through have all been crystal clear, was the reticle set very bright, which can cause 'flaring'?
Between Eotech and Aimpoint i think a lot of it is personal preference, i much prefer the Eotechs 1/65 MOA reticle for fast aquisition over the plain dot of (most) Aimpoints. I also prefer the square 'window' rather than the round tube body of the Aimpoint, but again thats personal preference.
I've not had a chance to have look through one of the real Eotech magnifiers, but i've looked at a real Eotech through a chinese knock off magnifier (x5 IIRC) and it seemed to do the job. Not sure the magnified reticle lends itself to precision shooting at a distance but it does help <100m.
I'd love to get an Eotech + magnifier but even at US prices i can't afford one at the moment (get the violins out  ). I've been very tempted with buying a mid-range one e.g. Sight Mark but i've been burned like that before and i am now twice shy!
Please post how you get on/what you decide to buy (if anything)

Re: EOTech Holographic + Magnifier - anyone used one before?
I've seen the EOTech reticle in the flesh a few times and I personally like it. Also looked at other options and I'm pretty set on the EOTech XPS2, it's just the magnifier that I'm undecided on.
This will be going on my .22 initially and we only shoot out to 50m anyway.
Just looked at the Sight Mark magnifiers on amazon.com. At the prices they sell them in the US (<$150 including flip mount), I think that might be the way to go initially. Got to be worth a punt at that price.

Re: EOTech Holographic + Magnifier - anyone used one before?
I have used EOTechs and when available would always chose one over open "ghost ring" sights for snap as well as precision shooting. But having said that, if I had the opportunity to have used a low powered variable magnification scope, I would definitely have gone for that. In my mind if you are not restricted to a red dot don't restrict yourself.
As for the blurring lines Sim refereed to, I have experienced these when the brightness was too high. Just turn it down for crisper image. I always liked the in built safety power device, if it turns on you know it will last the shift. So as far as competitions and fun shooting are concerned you know it will last the shoot.
If you did get the real deal, it is unlikely that you would lose any money selling them in the UK, if you decided that you did not like them.
Personally I think the cost is a bit much for a .22 but then again they will last you years and you will be able to use them on several guns.
Let us know what you end up getting,
DM

Re: EOTech Holographic + Magnifier - anyone used one before?
Had a C-More sight on my SGC V22, did not like at all.
I use an Aimpoint on my SIg 556.....once zeroed and that is not too hard - it is great for quick reaction / tactical shooting..I just keep the dot to a sensible size..battery should last for ages even if left on., there is a model that seemingly has a 3 year life or so permanently on.
Was shooting it to 300+ a few weeks back...works just fine...albeit the standard eyeballs I was using need a good service.
My yank friends all go on about Eotech, probbaly cos it's American and no other reason

Re: EOTech Holographic + Magnifier - anyone used one before?
I've had an EOTech in the past and now have an Aimpoint on my AR15 M4. I much prefer the Aimpoint. Don't get me wrong the EOTech is not a bad system, I just couldn't get on with the reticle itself, I found that anything over 50 yards and the dot covered too much of the target. I find that for me the Aimpoint on the other hand is perfect for both targets and hunting.

You are putting it on a .22 LR?
Dont waste your money on the Eotech or Aimpoint, buy the low cost units.
Get a SightMark, Barska, ect.
They work just as well, look just as cool, and with no recoil on .22 they will last forever also.

Eotech reticles dont look fuzzy if you look at the target and not the reticle.
A lovely sight which you can dim down to a very precise dot maybe 1/2 moa or brighten right up and get a bright flare even in bright sunlight.
New XPS is better on battery life . Quality - you get what you pay for , id recommend one , indeed i have 3 !
