I Have a Question (well a couple actually)

#1 Post by Blu »

Following on from Dromia's thread about his ACF visit I wonder if I can put a couple of questions to you folks in the UK to help me better understand a few things. As some on here know I left the UK when the earth was still young and so I'm a wee bit out of touch on a lot of things. So here goes.

1. Are the majority of the shooting clubs in the UK private clubs with their own ranges.

2. What is the average annual cost of being a member of such a club, a roundabout figure will do.

3. What is the average membership numbers of a shooting club in the UK, yeah I know they vary, but just average will do.

4. What is the cost of NRA membership per year in the UK

5. What kind of insurance do the clubs need, do they pay land taxes or any kind of tax on top of insurance

There you go that will do for now. As I said I'm just trying to get my head around a couple of things going by what I read on here and another UK site I am a member of.

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

My club is a ltd. company now, with it's own indoor, 25 metre range, a shotgun and airgun field. All of our full-bore shooting is done on Army ranges, though.

The annual fee for my club is £96

We have about 320 odd members.

Sorry, don't know about the others

Blu,

My club uses a mix of MoD and private ranges, membership has just gone up to GBP50/PA with some range fees typically GBP12, we are well into three figures for membership. Individual NRA membership is GBP70 for an individual member, first year for new members is GBP45. Finally insurance is probably going to be a lot of third party stuff but I cannot be more precise. I know my club is insured as the company who insure me for the business also insure the NRA and clubs and he actually asked me who I shot for and told me they were all paid up and insured. I should have asked him what for..

Other clubs, well GBP100-160/PA is the going rate around here, membership numbers are anywhere from 75-175 as a rule

Hi Blu,

I have tried to answer your questions below with as much detail as I can get out of the database on a dodgy (weak) connection during the NRA AGM - yes, it is that interesting tesnews

As some on here know I left the UK when the earth was still young and so I'm a wee bit out of touch on a lot of things. So here goes.

1. Are the majority of the shooting clubs in the UK private clubs with their own ranges.

We have around 750 affiliated clubs of which the majority shoot on MoD ranges either all the time or to supplement their own, usually, short or gallery rifle ranges. Most fullbore clubs are 'private' or members clubs but there are a few who run the 'club' as a business.

2. What is the average annual cost of being a member of such a club, a roundabout figure will do.

Club membership varies wildly depending on what the member gets/what the club supplies. Fees can go from £20-£30 per year to cover the Secretary's admin/affiliations etc to £300-£400 for a club that has ranges/accommodation/steward/bar/catering etc

3. What is the average membership numbers of a shooting club in the UK, yeah I know they vary, but just average will do.

We have an average of just over 70 people per club on our database but this will include people who belong to more than one club.

4. What is the cost of NRA membership per year in the UK

Annual Standard membership is £70.

5. What kind of insurance do the clubs need, do they pay land taxes or any kind of tax on top of insurance

Clubs will need Public Liability insurance as a minimum but most really need more. If you want to see what we have in our club policy, which we think is a good all round policy to cover the basic needs, pm me & I can send you a copy.

There you go that will do for now. As I said I'm just trying to get my head around a couple of things going by what I read on here and another UK site I am a member of.

Many thanks in advance for any replies.
