Bargain!

#1 Post by Sandgroper »

On the weekend I managed to get some spare time to go and pick up my latest purchase. For the princely sum of £75 (which included RFD fees) I got myself a Marlin 989 M2, which included, what appears to be the original Weaver scope. See here for specs http://www.gunslot.com/pictures/1965-ma ... 2-w-prices

Here it is!

I tried to strip it down last night to give it a clean and to understand the way it functions, but I only got as far as unscrewing all the screws. :cool2:

The fit around the barrel band was so good that it wouldn't budge and seeing as the rifle seemed to be in near original condition (for a 35 year old rifle) I didn't force the issue.

I must admit not being able to strip it doesn't seem to be a problem. I read an ad (I'll post it when I find it again  ) in which Marlin claimed it didn't need cleaning! :o I think the previous owner took this claim seriously as the barrel was filthy :bad: but the bolt and inside the receiver, from what I could get to, was remarkably clean. In the end, I just wiped some oil on just to make myself feel better about the lack of success at stripping it. The barrel came clean very quickly with a couple of goes with the pull through. Speaking of the bolt, I really like the design of the cocking handle. It slides in and out to enable you to lock the working parts to the rear, which great. :good: No last round hold open, but as it's only a 7 round mag (standard Marlin one) I think I can manage to count to 7!

Am I happy? Very, very happy! :shakeshout: Just need to give it test run.

Well you know I have a thing for Marlins anyway...... but I like that. 16" barrel?
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

From Brophy's history....

Introduced in 1965, production ending in 1978 with slightly more than 110000 being produced. Two magazines were furnished with the rifle until 1970, then the practice discontinued.

The bolt hold open, just as you described, was introduced on the rifle in 1969.

1965 - $49.95
1978 - $73.95

Almost a dollar per year inflation!

Thought you might. I haven't actually measured the barrel but it should be an 18 inch barrel and 37 inch OAL.

Thanks for that info, Sim. According to the serial number mine was made in 1977.
