CF Moderator on a RF
Is anyone else doing this?
A the range yesterday one of the guys had a 522 with an A-tec moderator (22lr Mod) - when questioned as to how? (The 522 is threaded 1/2x28 UNEF) he pointed out he had an adapter made to convert it.
The topic of Mods carried on for a while, which when I got home got me thinking (Initially about getting an Adapter made for myself from 1/2x28UNEF to 1/2x20 UNF) but I then though what about my .223 Mod - I have a CMM-4 threaded 1/2x28 UNEF - so out it came and on to the 522. (it is rated to 6.5mm)
Using Sub sonic ammo it was just as quiet as my dedicated SAK .22lr mod - grouped the same (Just heavier!!)
The difference really showed itself with standard and high velocity ammo though - a huge improvement on the SAK - mind made up - another CMM-4 coming for the 522!!!
Anyone else run a CF mod on their rimfires?
Mike

Re: CF Moderator on a RF
there was a warning posted about this sometime last year I think. if memory serves, the issue was the amount of unburnt powder that can build up in CF mods when used with RF, eventually causing damage/explosion I forget which, you might want to research it some first.
edit, did a quick search, problem maybe related to reusing the mod on a centrefire rifle after protracted use on a rimfire.

I could only find one reference to "Don't do it on the tinternet" and that was 3rd hand info - Dropped my friendly gunsmith an E-mail and his reply was - "Been doing for years!!" - but CLEAN it before putting it back on a CF. my CMM-4 is modular so cleaning is easy enough.kennyc wrote:my ASE utra is cleaned by the hot gases from multiple .308 rounds going bang, its welded construction as I believe are a lot of other CF mods, try getting your tail bristle brush into one of those bad boys tongueoutmeles meles wrote:*shocked *

if you can clean the mod then no problem, if you don't or can't then maybe a big problem? as far as I can find out it was an article by Peter Jackson of Jackson Rifles in Sporting Rifle that gave the warning (Feb/March 2012 apparently)MiLisCer wrote:I could only find one reference to "Don't do it on the tinternet" and that was 3rd hand info - Dropped my friendly gunsmith an E-mail and his reply was - "Been doing for years!!" - but CLEAN it before putting it back on a CF. my CMM-4 is modular so cleaning is easy enough.kennyc wrote:my ASE utra is cleaned by the hot gases from multiple .308 rounds going bang, its welded construction as I believe are a lot of other CF mods, try getting your tail bristle brush into one of those bad boys tongueoutmeles meles wrote:*shocked *

And strangely enough, my local dealer has just told me that tha A-tec RF mod is available in 1/2 x 28........ (S&W M&P project on the back burner.......!

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Alas they are not - I spoke to Jackson's about this earlier this year - I'll try and attach the datasheet to this post - if not - Ill see if I can PM it.
