AR 15 Gurus

I have a SDI AR15 with a standard butt stock when you take the butt stock off theres a tiny spring about 2 x 30 mm that goes into a hole on the recoil tube plate and the butt stock presses down onto it , or its supposed to . What is its function ?
Answers on a postcard please .

I think the spring puts pressure on the rear take down pin (the pin that holds the top and bottom together) stops the pin coming all the way out.. I think...
There should also be a small pin thats inside of the spring..

If it's oriented horizontally (parallel to the bore) then it is, as bnz41 said, the take down pin spring which holds the take down pin in place (which holds the upper and lower together).

Problem solved , I have a thick butt pad which is rubber , what had happened was the retaining screw had pulled through the rubber allowing the butt stock to become loose [ solved that by putting a couple of washers in the recess hole ] , then the spring had protruded and bent over and crushed . So I have cut it short and put in a pin which is retained by the butt stock , which now makes it easier to reassemble , rather than trying to push back a length of spring .
