Stuck case removal

#1 Post by Dustyman »

Any suggestions as per post , 7mm rum case stuck in fl sizer . Case all lubed before went in but shell holder didn't seem ( under close examination after ) good fit so pulled part of rim over leaving case in the die . Tried drill , tap m6 , and to extact but it sheared off the pin when trying to pull out against sleeve resting on the die rim , first call after that was a light ( obviously not light enuf ) tap on end of decapprer pin , slight bend , so stuffed that bit !! Sacrificed that centre bit then by placing in freezer and " tapping " it harder to see if could dislodge , que Am I spending time with no hope of an answer to save buying a new die or is it a matter of pride now to get the # king case out ? Or should I just give up and get a new die. ?
Don't you just hate it where the simplest thing is determined to just bugger you up ?

Any suggestions not including shooting it or lamping over a hedge would be appreciated , cheers

If you unthread the part from the top of the die then lever it up with a flat bit screw driver till the neck sizer is free then withdraw it , then find a metal rod which will insert into the case , then knock it free .

If putting it in the freezer doesn't work, logically putting it in the oven should ...

Anyone able to quote the coefficients of thermal expansion for brass and steel?

A couple of years back I bought the RCBS stuck case remover, one of the best 15 bucks I ever spent.

Is it possible to put the correct shell holder back over the rim, while simultaniously inserting it into the press...?

Yeeeehaaaa , thank you dave and all for offers . The little b***ers out . Never thought to pull the expander thro, durrrrrrrrr , thought it would be too tight , been messing about and scratching my head on this for a couple of weeks and just took me 1 minute . Will remember that next time !!!

Just for info though is it likely to be the rim that was weak or is it poss that I may have lubed it too much ? It was not dry when came out , had lube on it is it poss that the lube could cause it to hold. ? Should you fully degrease and clean the inside before starting ? I always wipe out new dies but never fully degrease. Don't want to do it again , cases are too expensive . Cheers
