600 pounds of explosives and fully primed

#1 Post by Christel »

Just read this, got me thinking, anyone on here know what the blast radius is for such a beast?

I know it says 50m all killed and serious injury at 100m but what about flying debris kills?

pe4king will be along with all things that really go BOOM! in a while, but 600lbs of HME you don't want to be anywhere within 400m line of sight because of shrapnel...
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

We'd stand rather further back than that, or at least behind a ooman...

35lb Demolition charges can throw grit and stones out to 400 yards quite easily.

Just curious, scrapnel is bits from the bomb?

They say serious injured at 100m but SimG you say 400m line of sight...anyone know at what distance one will only feel the warm air blown into one's face?

That is my view as well SimG, estimate the blast radius and double it would be good for me, oh and try and get behind something improvable.

A mate of mine lit up a mountain in N Africa many years ago and hid behind a Bedford lorry at what he considered to be a safe distance, he told me he knew things had gone pear shaped when the Bedford was rocked onto just one side and rocks the size of car engines were landing around him.

Just trying to understand what 600 pounds can do.

It is about 300 kilos, I can relate to that.

Scrapnel ! We likes that does us !

Shrapnel is young Lieutenant Shrapnel's invention: deliberate notching of a munitions casing to cause it to fragment, or filling it with small projectiles, for example tungsten cubes or steel balls

Henceforth though Scrapnel shall be the name for all the unintentional debris chucked up too. Stones, grit, twigs, trucks...

Not quite in the same league but I've been about 10m away from 0.75lb of explosives going off.

It was the first time I fired the M18 Claymore AP mine. The minimum safe distance to set it off is supposed to be 15m, but after setting it up (where I was told to by the Instructors!) I was only able to move about 10m away. The solution - "Go and get your pack and lay down behind it. When you are ready detonate the mine!"

Great fun - almost as much fun as firing the Charlie G! Explains a lot really. :G

Hmm, the good ole CG !

*Wonders what Mr Plod might say if a variation for 84mm rifle is requested...*

Just tell them you're having trouble with armoured vehicles or that you need one as earth moving equipment! :-P
