SGC 9mm - Catastorphic Failure - Almost lost an eye :(

Scary stuff!.

Just had a call from Shooting Supplies, their "gun guy" had a look at it and is at a loss, doesn't know what caused it so it's being sent to SGC today.

Also had a call off my Firearms Dept. 10mins later asking for their details as she couldn't find an RFD number for them!. She also wants me to take my FAC in tomorrow to have the 9mm removed, I can have an empty slot for another 9mm or something else if I want for free but after tomorrow I would have to pay for it either way.

I'm pretty much stuck in the middle here, part of me loves the gun as it's great fun to shoot, part of me says I'll never feel safe firing it again and everyone else is telling me not to get another gun that has so many inherent problems ie. fussy on ammo, feed problems, doesn't shoot lead bullets, needs bits filing off the bolt to work etc. etc.

Either way I'll have to take my FAC in and have it removed, just not sure what to do about putting one back on as I don't know what's going to happen with this one

I have had rifles at my gunsmith for many weeks whilst being repaired, I advised my FEO but did not have the rifle removed from my FAC, had you told them the rifle was heading South?

I told them it was broken and had to be returned to the seller for repair or replacement, which is what I was told by Shooting Supplies when I rang them.

I think the best option is to get an empty slot for another 9mm, that way if it's repaired or replaced I can stick it back on.

When I first rang Shooting Supplies he did ask if I wanted another and I told him then that I really didn't know, the more I think about it the less I feel safe shooting it. Even if I get a replacement I can't see me wanting it or keeping it and will end up selling it at an expensive loss, while that's not a good thing I'd rather do that than shoot it again.

Maybe it's just too soon for me to be making that decision and I just need more time to settle down and not let my emotions get in the way.

Is there a comparable 9mm you could get instead of the SGC version? I wouldn't blame you for being dubious about getting another one, especially as you don't yet know for sure what caused it to let go in the first place.

Unfortunately not, SGC are the only option.

It's a great idea and I'm surprised there isn't another manufacturer who's offering this, almost everyone who's seen it wants one but usually in 10mm, .40 or .223 for better outdoor range ability.

I'm not surprised at all that it's not offered by anyone else...... You want to hazzard a guess at what your "incident" would have been had it been at 55000psi and 35000?

Remember, the mech is a simple "interupted blow back". It relies on the mass of the bolt and the strength of the spring to keep the action closed when firing, the "interuptor" on the fire control unit to hold the bolt in the rear position and the the strength of the buffer/return spring to drive the bolt forward an chamber a fresh round.

As to what happened? I think there will be numerous theories but you'll never really know. Ammo will be what SGC hold onto. Personally, I reckon the "interuptor" failed, for what ever reason, allowing the bolt to carry on and smash into the rear upper reciever.

This is what confuses me. Why did SGC make a whole new action for this thing? Why not just make an AR modified so that the bolt always holds open and is released by a lever? Save themselves a lot of work and allow them to easily make it in different calibers.

If i'm understand what you mean, its because if also owned a straight-pull AR i.e. you'd have a standard AR lower, you could attach it to the upper with the gas system and hey presto you'd have a fully operational semi-auto full bore rifle! Unless you were actually caught using it the police would have no way to prove you had being using it as a S5 gun. :-P

To put the previous post in alternative legal terms:

A firearm that once falls into S5, legally stays in S5 regardless of what you do to it subsequently. So you can't start with an AR15 and modify it to reach the SGC solution - what you have is still a S5 weapon because it started life as such.
