Just got a call from my sister-in-law asking for advice about ridding her garden of foxes. She lives in Stretham Common, South London and is plagued by these bloody foxes on a daily basis and they are now getting very brave!
They are digging up the veg patch, stealing things from the garden, sh***ng everywhere and they made an appearance yesterday when my 18 month old niece was playing in the sand pit.
Bloody neighbours feed them as they are "so cute and cuddly" and "they dont do any harm" but if they are willing to make an appearance in the garden during day light hours whilst the baby is playing, this is a cause for concern. Is there anything available that will deter these foxes from the garden or should she run the risk of alienating herself and her family by calling in the pest control boys to do a proper job.
I have just spent the last 10 minutes typing a practical advice to this thread, only to see it lost yet again, and be kicked back to the log in page.

human (male urine) supposadly keeps them at bay also we used human hair in tights hung at the corners of our garden ,that worked but no one near me feeds them ,to my knowledge ,maybe a well silenced 22 at vclose range .........

I usually type any long replies for any forum into word (or such like) and then copy into the post. Lost a few long posts in the early days of Eze boards and learnt my lesson then.

I advised her a couple of weeks ago about peeing in the garden and putting up tights filled with hair and it has worked in a fashion! The remedy seems to only be effective for approx 1-2 nights and then they return! Her husband has been 'watering the roses' but with the warmer weather upon us, there is a distinctive odour in the garden which is not ideal (smells like the rest of London now! )
I did wonder if buying bags of Lion dung and spreading this around the perimeter of the garden would help-or is this just an urban myth?

The real problem with smell deterrents is that they either evaporate too quickly or they smell rotten.
Urine not really a solution in this case as they are very used to human smells, and the food factor will overcome most things
Most logical solution will likely be to find where the foxes are getting in to the garden.
If under a fence, then use netting as per rabbit proofing if possible.
If they are jumping a fence, then a floppy trellis is about the best - good against burglars too.
If panel fencing, then use carpet gripper strip.
Remember, you are only trying to dissuade them from visiting one garden, they will have other routes to use hopefully.
Legally, we are only allowed to use chemicals for approved ( on the label) use. So any odd smelly stuff leaves you open to prosecution/persecution.
Remove any potential access points, remove any source of food and actively discourage them if you see them in daylight, with luck they will give it up as a bad job and move on to somewhere that is less hassle.
I would not advocate shooting them as it could lead to a world of pain for whoever took the shot if someone reports them. I guess trapping and humanely destroying them is an alternative...
