TR140 - results of todays outing

#1 Post by phaedra1106 »

Had a good day out with my autistic son today, took 4 imodium and managed to do the 25 miles to clay pigeon for 10:15 without any emergency stops!. Jared did about as well as me, had a couple of sausage and bacon butties and tea/coffee and then drove the next 23 miles to Ponteland range for the afternoons full-bore shoot.

Spent the first session sighting in the new Sightron SIII 8-32 scope using my known good load of Hornady A-Max 168gr over 40gr of Vit N140. Second session it was onto the TR140 and Nosler 168gr Custom Competition, I'd shot these before and had equally good results as the A-Max and as I had the chance to pick up 2,000 of them on our last US trip at a really good price I stocked up on them smile2

I shot 5 x 3 shot groups at 37 to 42grs at 1gr increments at 100m from a prone position using my Steyr SSG-04 and a Sinclairs F Class micro-adjustable Bipod, I'm not comfortable lying prone due to my arthritis and shoulder problems but I have to say I was more than pleased with the results.

All of the groups are about 2.5" low-right compared to the original A-Max load but it was grouping not position I was interested in for now.

As I hope you can see from the photos below all of the loads gave sub-1" groups with the best being at 41gr, I went back and did a 4th shot of the 41gr and turned what would have been a nice .5" clover leaf into a slightly worse .7" group :cool2:

Good result then :good:

41gn sounds like a fairly light load, it'll be interesting to see what sort of velocity that gives,

According to Lapua/Vit it should be around the 2550fps area, I did stick some Lapua Scenar Moly down it with 42Gr but by then we'd moved back to 300m and even the Sightron doesn't help my eyes at that distance so they were pretty bad.

41 grains is close to my N140 McQueen load with 167 Scenar's - comfortable to shoot and very accurate. Interesting to see you use Magtech primers, I always got on very well with them when loading in this area.

My A-Max loads were using standard CCI but DodgyRog made me an offer on the Magtechs I couldn't refuse, I now have enough primers and powder to keep me going for about 3 years smile2

Magtech gave me very ES's at middle of the road loads with N140 however they flattened early which pushed me to CCI primers, I doubt it was a pressure thing, more that the material the Magtech are built with is softer than CCI or Federal. I still use Magtech in .303's which reminds me, I need to find a supplier as I only have a small handful left. Peter Lawman used to stock them but he is a bit of a drive to get to.
