"Pay and Play" ranges.....?

#1 Post by Sim G »

Back in the pistol days, (yeah, I know I keep harking back to them! ) I used to shoot at Stone Lodge, near Dartford. Suited me brilliant because they were open seven days a week. Turn up, pays ya money, shoot ya guns! Wenesday mornings, Monday afternoons........ mid week rest days were a delight! (mrs was in the job and no kids!)

Anyway, stuff is just so much more difficult now. Shifts and kids stuff keeps me off the firing point more often than not. I get one weekend in five, off. Trying mentioning to the other half that there's a club 600m shoot on that day! Thankfully, my other club has an indoor 25m range that we have open a couple of nights a week, so at least I get smething in...

So, to the question. Are there any commercial ranges about where you can, turn up and play, and day of the week? Bisley is just too far and couple that with the unpredicability of the South M25 and the rigidness of school letting out time..... :shifty:

Kent and the South East would have had, if the Met police hadn't done the Stone Lodge proprietor like a kipper....! **** :cool2:
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

no good for the OP but for others, Ivythorn Sporting have a 100 yard range available for hourly hire.

Ditto, lane rental is always what I want and I prefer to deal with a commercial company than a club.

Hi Yes I remember stone lodge, went there every month with S.E.Essex R&P club. If you live close enough theres Minsterly Ranges in Shropshire. 100yds and 50 yds shoot all day for £30 up to .5 I think. There on the web look them up and phone. best I can do.

Don't quote me on it but Kynoch at Mildenhall in Suffolk have a 3-lane 100 yard underground range which used to be available by the hour.

Most clubs over here have something like pay and shoot. If not a member of the club you pay a set fee which is usually around $5. Some clubs you have to be with a member, then there are other clubs like our local club which is open to the public for a $5 per gun fee. This arrangement I have found usually brings in new members as well, with club membership at say $50 a year which is what I pay, it gives folks a chance to try the club and it's facilities first before joining.

For me though this is a temporary arrangement as I will be building my own four hundred yard range on our property come the late spring early summer.

Sandgroper,

It took us a long time to get to where we are now, we had land when we lived down State but there were too many folks living nearby to build a range. Up here however it's a different story, On the property now we have a natural small valley with woods and a natural back stop. Even so I am still going to build a backstop using the old telephone poles, they can be bought here for $10 each. I'm going to have the backstop 20 feet high with encompassing sides going out at an angle with earth and sand up against the back of the stop, I'm then going to put in target slots made from wood every 25 yards from the firing point up to the 400 yard point.

The firing point itself will be poured concrete with three shooting tables for the shooters. After that's all done it's happy shooting days are here again :shakeshout:
