Do you shoot at 1000 yards?

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

Are you a 1000 yard shooter and if not why not?

Accuracy in MOA at any distance is an accepted international standard. Read any article on rifle shooting and it invariably quotes the accuracy in MOA and repeatability, in simpler terms group size. I sometimes wonder if anyone owns a rifle that fails to shoot sub half MOA when I read some of the articles.

Anyway it set me thinking. Do you shoot 1000 yard stuff and if so what is the level of accuracy you are prepared to accept with your system?

Now this is a very open question, 3.5" for a 5 shot group is going to be very acceptable if you are a Bench Rest shooter, equally five in the black with an SMLE .303 at 1000 would keep me very happy. Where do you sit within these extremes? Too many people tell me they do not have a rifle that will shoot 1000 yards but I am struggling to think of any full bore rifle that will not get out to that distance. Personally I am increasingly finding myself having more and more fun with rifles that were not designed to be the top dogs at this distance. Roll on cast boolits at 1000, is it doable?

1000 yard shooting should be a mind set as much as anything and other than not having access to a 1000 yard range or truly having an unsuitable rifle I see no reason why people do not try it. Getting rounds in the black is where you start, the half MOA groups can wait for another day.

I cannot wait to get Christel's 8x58RD pointed at a 1000 yard target. If I tell myself the rifle and I can do it then there is fair chance on a still day at a big frame on Stickledown, I suspect many other people if they try can do the same.

I try to shoot long range as often as possible with my AW but we are dictated by what ranges we can book, my last trip to Stickledown I shot an acceptable 49 ex 50 at 1000 with an untested load, I know the rifle is up to the job which leaves me as the weak link ;)
I have also just purchased a fast twist .223 for the boy to use, im hoping with that and heavy bullets (80gr) that will get out to 1000 I have little doubt that it will.
Also normally twice a year we get onto ser 45 at Lydd and have managed to drop the 1100m Fig 11 target most satisfying :good:

I use my 338 Lap Mag at 1000 yards at Warminster MOD (Actually 900 metres / 984 yards but who is counting?).

Its a bit of a wind 'cheater' compared to say a 308 but I am happy enough!

Working on accuracy now..... getting MOA but not entirely reliably enough.

Also planning to use a 260 Rem there at next outing.... a bit cheaper to feed!

My only other viable long distance range is Bisley....just joined NRA so will be going there ASAP.

No. It just doesn't grab my attention.

I don't have that mindset. I have just as much fun shooting at 25m as at 600m (not that I do it that much). I shoot within my level of fun and that means I'm a lazy shooter. All I'm interested in is dialling the adjustment for range and shooting at the target. I don't care if it's dead centre or off to one side - I'll aim off, to bring it back to centre. For safety as much as anything else, I limit my range to 600m max.

For me, the interest is in the rifle and not the distance you're shooting. People say only accurate rifles are interesting - not for me. I would rather own an absolute pig of a rifle and really have to do some work to get it to shoot decent groups at 100m fingerscrossed than own a laser out to 1000m.

But then, everyone is different and that's what makes life fun. :good:

Not yet, it's just a matter of finding a Barton Road date that I can actually get to and bring 308 and 6br if it's not blowing old boots.

Steve, I have seen folks shoot 1000 with irons and a peep sight thingy, god knows how they do it. It takes me all my time to see without that stuff.

if I can get them in the Vbull that's fine for me, group size not important.

Currently it's all I can think about and yet I've never been out that far, the road to an FAC is doing my nut in!!!

I enjoy all shooting whether it's 20m with my air rifle or blatting off rounds at whatever range, but once we start pushing out I find my interest really picks up!

Shame I'm such a s*** shot
