Deer Stalking… reliable word of mouth recommendation from someone you know has undertaken such stalking being offered by a specific syndicate is best. Like other walks of life, stalking has its scammers. E.G., make sure there is deer, of the species sought, on the land being made available; that appropriate insurance is in place; that there is recourse for recompense if it all goes wrong. In addition, obtain and understand terms and conditions; consider the implications of allowing a syndicate leader to be a FAC mentor; make sure ‘coaches’ are suitably qualified; consider the quality of deer management, the construction & execution of a shooting plan and safety; determine if the land is over-shot.

If in doubt, contact BASC or similar.

North Yorkshire issue open tickets on you first application....or they used to about three years ago.

....unsure why forces differ from one region to another.

EXACTLY!

There appears to be no common approach from force to force. Same goes for number of firearms held, ammuntion, duplicate calibres etc.....

As a new shooter it has been hard to get the right information I needed, it's a big step coming from military shooting to normal shooting.

I spoke with my FEO last year about an application for FAC, "don't worry, new rules and new mangers would have there own spin on home office guidelines".

That shocked me, however reading different articles and such, I think he was right !!

I read an article where a Durham FEO told someone it was illegal to shoot a fox with a shotgun ??...I stand no chance of getting a .50cal then

Scary isn't it? Managers should not have their own spin on/interpretation of the HO guidelines. Regarding the .50cal for Fox, well they can be scabby things so you could always say it was to minimise contact, plus a .50cal saves picking any pieces up.
