My two kids don't live with me, they live with their mother in S Wales. I don't get too see them as often as I would wish, but I try and make the most of when I do.

So it was a nice surprise when they asked on a previous visit if we could go "fly fishing" next time I saw them (Every other weekend at the moment but just for the Saturday as my Lad plays rugby on a Friday and Sunday)

So living 4 hours away I needed to find a "novice" friendly venue and make the plans - I was very surprised at the number of venues that simply were not helpful at all

"No, you will need a day ticket too and you cannot help them to fish" was the stock answer from at least 3!!

I finally found a realistic owner who understood where I was coming from - as I didn't want to fish, just help these two to get casting and maybe hook a trout or two.

We were well looked after by June at Seven Oaks fishery near Cardiff.

This is the result of the day, from two youngsters who had never cast a fly line before (They have both bait and sea fished with me though)

My youngest - fish on - but being bullied! - My Dad helping with the netting.


My daughter in to her 3rd fish!


And the bag for 2 hours of fun.

I let them chose their own flies! - My lad used a sze 12 GRHE and my daughter a sze 10 Cormorant (Both tied by me - I tie all my own flies)

Well done. Its difficult when the kids are young to get them into fishing; fly fishing hardest of all. When my lad was small all he wanted to do was eat the maggots...

Traditional flies then, so much better than the garish lures so many lakes see these days. I tied my own for years and passed all of my fly fishing and tying stuff to my son who is a keen fisherman a couple of years ago. Right now he still seems to prefer Pike and Carp but with luck he will come over to proper fishing at some point.

I try to tie my own too ... Have been successful using those for stocked rainbows, wild rainbows, big wild brownish (best over 4lb), 20+ small brownish, sea trout an salmon up to around 25lb. It's s great feeling catching with your own fly.
