M1895 Steyr-Mannlicher... Want!

#1 Post by Tower75 »

Hello all

Rather then 'jack an existing thread, I thought I would ask, now I realise this question might be the equivalent to a sixteen year old girl saying "I want a pony!" but; I'm going to have a free S1 allowance soon, and I've always liked the look of the M95. Unfortunately I cannot simply slap down a cheque for one, I'd have to save the pennies up, but I would like to know is, would it be worth even trying?

So what I was hoping to ask was:
- Is the M95 rare? I must admit, I've only seen 2 in my time shooting
- I know that they originally started chambered for the 8x50R cartridge, then were re-bored for the 8x56R, so is it more likely to encounter the latter?
- Is ammunition available, what I need to reload? If so, are dies and cases and bullets made, or what I have to convert something?
- Perhaps more importantly, how much are they?

A very "open" question, I know. But you have to ask to know, don't you? sign92

Here's some for sale.

http://www.gunstar.co.uk/Rifle/Steyr-M9 ... 29695.aspx According to the GT ad, they have three for sale.

Dromia has ammunition. Kranks also stocks Prvi Partisan 8x56R.

My priority at the moment is sourcing the en-bloc clips - without them, they're single shots.

Go for it. :good:

Tower, i don't think they are an especially rare rifle they just don't seem very popular with the military rifle shooter.

8X56R ex mil ammo is available as is re-loading kit and boolit molds. FMJ's may be problem as a .329 is required.

The Mannlicher style chargers can be found with a bit of sniffing about, there are usually some on e bay

They are an excellent and affordable alternative to enfields, mausers, etc and i would say, get one in 8X56.

Cheers, guys. I'll have a look around.

Are FMJ bullets not available? Or are they just a pain to find

Hornady apparently did a run of 0.329 FMJ, but there's no sign of them on their website.

Prvi Partisan (PPU) make a 200gn 0.327 dia FMJ. So depending on the bore of the rifle you get, it might be OK. http://www.prvipartizan.com/search_b.php

PPU also make SP ammunition in 8x56R as well as FMJ.

A-561 8 x 56 RS Mannlicher SP 208gn 700 meters per sec

A-384 8 x 56 RS Mannlicher FMJ BT 208gn 700 meters per sec

HTH.

We can't use SP ammo, though, can we? For target practice I mean.

No, but as PPU is making SP ammo as well as FMJ, there must be a market and they would possibly be the best source of components - at this time.

Nice guns dont see many, Most you see will have "budapest" on them as from the Austrohungarian era. You can get ones with Steyr on them as well- some come with stamped rack numbers on the barrel shank as well as Hege waffen.
Be carful if you choose to get one, I have heard "stories" of the bolt handles breaking, could be pub talk though .

I would have one for sure, i would have everything!
