Hi I'm a new member and joined Christmas day

#1 Post by ronboy »

I shoot a no4 mk2, 6.5x47, .22 ruger, 38/357 and a 12ou. I shoot in Gallery rifle and 300m events. Enjoy reloading. Given up on BP pistol as I can't get over the loss of our CF pistols. At least once a week I am making holes appear in A4. My base is in Shropshire.

Hi Ronboy and welcome to the forum, I am a No4 fan as well, and will be interested to hear about your 6.5x47 as I am thinking of going that way in new year for hunting competitions, at the moment my short list is the 6.5xv47 or the 6.5 Swede.

Hi ovenpaa, I can only tell what I know about my 6.5x47, it has a 28inch barrel and I use lapua cases and lapua scena bullets 123grn. When I first loaded for the rifle I read all I could find on the internet. In the states they were using 40.2grns reloader15, this seemed to me too much as I read this cartridge was not a barrel burner and was low recoil. My first efforts were rel15 35.5, federal small rifle primer, col 2.696. This loading gave a reasonable group at 300yds but was blown about by the cross wind. 36.3grns gave me fps 2725 with an improved group but the best groups I've had are with 37grns of rel 15, about .5 inch at 100yds. At 300 I've shot 5Vs and 5 5s. I would add all this information works for me in my rifle. If I can be of more help,no problem Ronboy

What distances have you shot out to with your rifle Ronboy? I hear they are very capable out to 1000 yards and someone in my club has good results and also says it is a low recoil rifle. I want to build with ann all up weight of under 5kgs 'scoped so low recoil is always nice.

Hi Ovenpaa As yet I have only shot this rifle out to 300mts but I have heard from other guys who tell me it's good for 1000yds with more fps than a .308 at the 1k distance. Ronboy

Guys,
The 6.5x47 can work at 1000yards. Richard Wild, an Aussie benchrest shoot recently captured their 1000 yard 5-shot group record with a 6.5x47 - group was just over 2 inches.

I've seen this round shoot sub. five inches in benchrest in the UK but, I wouldn't choose it as a 1000 yard round. Lapua developed it for 300m ISSF competition.

Cheers

I am thinking of running a fairly short heavy contour barrel as the rifle needs to be light and it will be used for three different positions of shooting, it also needs to be capable of 80 shots in four hours in warm weather so barrel temperature is a consideration. Down side of the shorter barrel is getting out to longer distances which I am sure to try at some stage, if nothing else it should make an accurate 600m rifle and will be perfect for the 150-300m stuff which is what the competitions are mostly shot at. Other consideration is it has to be capable of shooting factory ammunition which makes the 6.5x47 so much more appealing in may respects.
