FAC question - Shotgun Slug
Evening all,
I have a slot on my FAC for a Section 1 shotgun, as I intend to give Practical/Target SG a go in the future.
However, I don't currently have the ability to buy/hold Slug ammo. The SG was a last-minute afterthought and I didn't realise that I might need Slug when I filled in the FAC form.
Anyway... Even though I don't have Slug on my FAC, could I turn up to a SG shoot and still use it, if it were 'supplied' to me? Or is it a total no-no unless it's on my FAC?
Cheers,
Judders

From memory, I think you need it on your FAC.

Re: FAC question - Shotgun Slug
Unfortunately, yes, you need it on FAC.
All ammunition except
a)cartridges containing five or more shot, none of which exceeds ·36 inch in diameter;
(b)ammunition for an air gun, air rifle or air pistol; and
(c)blank cartridges not more than one inch in diameter measured immediately in front of the rim or cannelure of the base of the cartridge.
falls in Section 1 Firearms Act
and as a result you need a FAC to possess
unless
it falls under the exemptions of s11(4) Firearms Act 1968 or S15 Firearms 1988
which
shotgun slug does not
so
apply for a variation for slug on your FAC
and
ouch!
that'll be £40.
It's rubbish that S15 only applies to rifles and muzzle-loading pistols, but that's the law. Since it is primary legislation, it requires an Act of Parliament to fix, which we are unlikely to get except as a sop in legislation that in general makes life more difficult. At the NRA we are quietly ready to grab a chance to change this and related issues, but, pragmatically, do not hold your breath.

Thanks for clarifying
I won't need it for a while, thankfully. Putting in for a variation 2 weeks after getting my FAC might have been some kind of record.

On 'good reason' you might have to be a club member where such shooting is permitted and UKPSA membership???

Re: FAC question - Shotgun Slug
I was considering on my renewal in february of putting in for a FAC shotgun and slug with the intention of doing T&P1 and multi-target.Wondering what the local force will make of that as speaking to one of the club members the other he said they wouldn't give him slug years ago when he tried PSG.

UKPSA run regular courses, which are great fun - and you don't need to be a member to attend themmr smith wrote:I was considering on my renewal in february of putting in for a FAC shotgun and slug with the intention of doing T&P1 and multi-target.Wondering what the local force will make of that as speaking to one of the club members the other he said they wouldn't give him slug years ago when he tried PSG.
AS LONG as you can show that you have booked to shoot at target shotgun &/or similar competitions then you ARE showing valid reason to own a S1 sg & S1 slug
Attending the UKPSA course is seen by some forces as a strong indicator of interest/intent - though some areas still are reluctant to grant S1 sg/slug even then!
All I can add is - try to attend a local event - they are GREAT FUN esp. when the clock is ticking & folk fumble the reloads & ammo is dropping all over!!
(don't ask me how I know....

I had authority for 410 slug for target shotgun without UKPSA membership.

Re: FAC question - Shotgun Slug
Don't they shoot something similar at Bisley called Target Shotgun?

I think it's what one's Police force is like generally towards guns and how they view one.
I followed your advice to great effect and got all that I wanted on my open ticket.
