SGC 9mm Lever release - something black continued
So as not to hijack the "Something Black" thread, which is interesting and still has legs, I have started this thread to discuss the "Unicorn".
Looking through T internet, it would appear that Bob has been running a series of updates to his design and mention has been made to a Mk4.
Of note, the sear has been modified so that the original scare of the gun going Sec5, should not happen again, also the release paddle has been made larger.
I was near to purchasing one last year and decided to hold off and see what happened with regards to the law and to give people a chance to find out if it was reliable over a period of time.
I know at least 2 of our forum members have one and would like to know what they think now they have had them a while.
Some discussion was made on Bob not recommending home loads, as with most manufacturers. I would be interested in hearing if anyone is using home loads, what they are using and if they are spending the extra on copper coated bullets.
If not what factory ammunition is available and how much?
Just off to look at Brownell's and see what my discount will get me,
DM

Re: SGC 9mm Lever release - something black continued
Good post DM. I too ditched the idea last year purely due to cost and delivery times.
The Black Gun demon has arisen again with Raven and if both these guns shot as well as my Marlin and 10/22 comp guns then I'd sell them tomorrow.
Looking forward to answers to DM's questions.

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, it's the sudden stop at the end!

I absolutely love the idea of it! I've never shot one, I've never even seen one in the flesh, but there really is a draw to it. Especially for some of us who lost semi full bore in '88!
There has always been a burning question though, why did he go with modified Uzi mags? Does the action not permit 9mm AR mags because of the design, or is it to do with securing aftermarket sales?
As for ammo, my local place has had Prvi and S&B in 9mm, but for the round count that something like this would get, reloading would have to be the way......... Still got the 9mm conversion kit for the Dillon and a set of dies!

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Bob's website states a Mk 6 lower reciever. Obviously some major development going on....

I have shot one on one of those "oh that looks interesting" approaches to another shooter, who was happily showing his build off to a dozen or so shooters who were crowding round. Mindful that everyone was using his ammunition I only fired a few rounds but got the feel of the thing - and I liked it.
On that build his scope was way too low and I had difficulty seeing through the scope, something that I have encountered before on my own AR build.
With that ammunition the empty cases were getting flung far and wide, so I am wondering how many cases get lost when re loading.
The UZI mags are apparently changed somehow by Bob to fit the gun, I would be interested to hear from Blackstuff if he has had success using standard mags and if the link he previously posted has sent mags to him.

I purchased one of the original sgc 9mms, which was later seized as section five. I'm not going to comment again publicly on what happened in that debacle, other than to say it was not the fault of the authorities.
As for SGC's customer service, I will not comment here either. I was previously banned from the airgunbbs for my complete honesty.
My replacement "section one" lever release rifle has been used with both factory and home loads. I'm using a 125 gr rn lead head over 3.9 gr of unique which is a very light target load for 25 & 50 yards. Others have expressed concern about barrel leading, reducing the bore near the flash hider, but I've yet to see this. I understand the potential for this issue to arise has been reduced in the latest version.
The 9mm Magwell system used by sgc also accepts Promags which are around $20 in the States, and a number of people have them here.

If I could get this without dealing with SGC I would. I have attempted several times to make conversations whilst visiting the stall at Bisley during the shows and each time come away swearing never to put money in to his hand.
Whilst at Diggle last month I handled one that Brian Fox had, I would be more inclined to put money his way.
Someone mentioned that at one point the stall had a business for sale sign up - as I did not see it with my own eyes I can not confirm. You can not help thinking that if the company is successful now how much more successful it could be with someone else at the helm. I will say that in the defence of SGC that at least they are trying new ideas.
Is there much drop between 25 and 50 yards? Have you used it in competition and did you find it worked well for you?
Do you know if the PRO MAG mag is this one?

I've had three SGC rifles in the past. Felt exactly as you did. The first one came direct, the second from Fultons, where I was left feeling exactly the same and the third I got from a local dealer who is now unfortunately dead......
But, at the time SGC's product was the best of the genre, so because of this, I took it on the chin. You never know, once the "legalities" of it all is more firm, another company may try their variation on the theme.

I have a 25 yard zero with iron sights. The adjustment in my sight picture for 50 yards is negligible, and that is with a 125 gr head with a light charge. After 60 yards though it drops like a brick. With a 115 gr factory load and a 25 yard zero, at 50 yards it will actual print slightly high, about an inch I believe. I have not shot it competitively, purely for fun on gallery and etr ranges. With my loads only 100-150 yard figure 11s are achievable, but I have to aim over the top of anything past 100 yards.Dangermouse wrote: Is there much drop between 25 and 50 yards? That is the right Pro Mag and works right out of the box. Bob cuts a slot in the UZi mags to accept the AR15 magazine catch, this being only modification necessary.
