Sub-sonic .44Mag loads?

#1 Post by HH1 »

Can anyone here advise?

On the 31 Dec 2020, I bought a new Dark Series Marlin 1894 in .44Mag with the intension of using a Mod which is on order. ATEC SMG .45
(One of our outdoor ranges is trying to get shooters using Mods as much as possible because of neighbours complaining)

I've not had chance to even try out my new gun yet. It comes with a 16" threaded barrel.

My questions are:

1. Will this Mod have any effect when using factory ammo? 240gr SJSP. 1,178 FPS
2. Can anyone point me towards suitable sub-sonic load data?

I am familiar with loading .357mag, .9mm, .375H&H, .223, .308, .45-70 etc. I have used Trailboss for lighter loads, but not worked on any sub-sonic loads.

Cheers.

I've been using .44 spl loads in magnum cases since before the handgun ban. My favourite load is 6.0gns of Unique. Out of my 16" 1894P it's giving 845fps. Which is good for 50yds. I got that load from a Lyman Manual all those years ago. The current 50th edition lists 240gn lead RNFP with between 5.8 and 6.6 gns. So just above starting.

200gn bullets I sneak up to 6.5 gns which will give me around 870 fps.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I was just thinking about that and was trying to figure out why I was just above starting. Then remembered it wasn't from the Lyman manual by the Hercules ( before Alliant) load data. It only listed 6.0gns for this powder and bullet combination. I know because I've just checked it! Lol
