Ballistics Software, Are they reliable?

l have just bought the Sierra Suite 16. l chronograph all my loads and feed the information in and it comes up with the amount of elevation required etc. Recently down at Stickledown at 900yds my elevation was spot on with a bull first shot and then a v bull etc. l got 73/75. the wind catching me out due wind 2 very close inners. My friend shooting next to me using the information for his ammo [l chrongraph his along with mine] could not get on at first due the elevation was to high. We are both shooting AIs with S&B scopes. In the Afternoon my elevation was 4 minutes to high to start with. When l did settle down the last ten shots came to 46.5 /50. My friends elevation using Sierra suite 16 was spot on and had a good shoot. So do l take it with a pinch of salt. Record the good elevations etc in the book and rely on that. just like the old days. l am doing a lot of load devolopment so it would be handy to be able to tely on it.

Hmm.. I use some Pejsa based spreadsheets, BulletFlight on my iFone and http://www.jbmballistics.com/ My preference being the latter but I cannot take it to the range easily. For .308/7,62x51 any of the above work quite well and will put my AI within 1MOA at 8/9/1000 and often better. Despite this I prefer to use tables, they are based on real life experience and JBM and the BF app is just a handy reckoner for odd distances and conditions.

For what it is worth non of the above work particularly well with fast flat shooting high BC projectiles, especially beyond 1000 yards

Wow! I did not know they had released JBM as an app, I will take a look at some point, being in DK data roaming is rather expensive...

Do a search under ballistic. There are two versions, the standard ballistic app and the field tactical ballistic app.

I've always been a bit negative towards these programs. Mainly because too many believe that all they require is a handheld anonometer, a pda and long range shots are a matter of course. However i've since had to re-think my attitude after talking with some of the new guys turning out of Sennybridge. The ranges they are achieving now, we just weren't capable off and they are competent users of such technology.

I still believe that the most efficient improvement to your long range shooting will be learning the bullet drop for your load and in which conditions whilst accurately reading the weather conditions. If done accurately and fed into such a comp then it may well increase your scores.

I'll still take the p*** if i see you hunched over your little keyboards though

I believe that you can make 4or 5 paper based range cards AND then understand the changes on that
